Numbers of note for this month:
- For the first time in seven years, a non-spoken word or Christmas music station has a share of the Washington DC market lead as Urban One R&B “Majic 102.3/92.7” WMMJ/WDCJ rises 7.7 to 8.2 to tie Public News/Talk 88.5 WAMU at the top. Ratings expert Chris Huff notes that outside of 97.1 WASH leading in all Holiday months and a pair of Decembers with Christmas Music, no music station has led since CHR “Hot 99.5” WIHT did so in June 2012. WMMJ’s rise follow similar moves made by sister 102.1 KMJQ Houston yesterday.
- Christian Music continues to grow in Washington as 91.9 WGTS rises 4.3 to 5.1 and “K-Love” 107.3 WLVW is up 0.9 to 1.3.
- The move of Greg Hill to mornings at Entercom Sports 93.7 WEEI Boston shows early signs of growth as the station rises 3.3 to 3.7 to tie Beasley’s competing “98.5 The Sports Hub” WBZ-FM
- In what Chris Huff notes is the first time ever, a Providence RI station has matched the audience share of a full-market Boston FM signal. Hall Communications’ “Cat Country 98.1” WCTK rose 1.6 to 1.8 to tie Entercom CHR “103.3 Amp Radio” WODS as that station dropped 2.1 to 1.8.
- The launch of Conservative Talk “Freedom 93.7” KDFD Denver saw that station rise from a 0.2 to 0.8, while sister News/Talk dropped from a 5.0 to 4.0 as it began its repositioning towards more Sports talk.
- The Denver market as usual sees the top stations very tightly bound. Entercom Classic Rock “99.5 The Mountain” KQMT returns to the top with a 5.6 to 6.2 gain. iHeartMedia Classic Rock “103.5 The Fox” KRFX stays in second with a 5.7 to 5.9 rise, while Bonneville Country 98.5 KYGO drops to third with a slight 5.8 to 5.7 slide. KSE Classic Hits “Kool 105” KXKL (4.8 to 5.6) and iHeart Alternative “Channel 93.3” KTCL (4.8 to 5.5) round out the top 5 with big gains. Also with a big gain is KSE Hot AC “Mix 100” KIMN with a 3.6 to 4.8 rise.
- A pair of Detroit stations were up by 1.1 this month. Entercom News 950 WWJ rose 4.8 to 5.9, while Beasley Classic Hip-Hop “105.1 The Bounce” WMGC rose 4.1 to 5.2
- Hubbard Hot AC “KS95” KSTP-FM Minneapolis rises 6.3 to 7.4 to leap-frog iHeartMedia Classic Hits “Kool 108” KQQL (7.5 to 7.0) for the market lead.
- Hubbard CHR “Movin 92.5” KQMV Seattle returns to the top of the market with a 5.3 to 6.4 rise. After leading the market by a 1.5 share point margin last month, iHeartMedia Classic Rock 102.5 KZOK drops to second with a 7.0 – 6.0 slide. Entercom Soft AC “94.1 The Sound” KSWD jumps to third with a 4.4 to 5.4 gain.
