iHeart’s New Magic Makes Its Way To Fort Myers

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
January 12, 2024

Magic 100.1 WZJZ Fort Myers Y100 After its significant launch in Miami, iHeartMedia has brought its Gold AC with Spanish presenters “Magic” brand to a second market with the flip of Hot AC “Y100” WZJZ Port Charlotte/Fort Myers FL to “Magic 100.1” this morning.

WZJZ will feature the same on-air lineup as Miami with Humberto ‘El Gato’ Rodríguez in mornings from 6-10am. Ailyn Luaces will host middays from 10am to 3pm followed by Tony Vargas from 3-7pm. Santiago Duarte will host nights from 7pm to 12am.

iHeartMedia launched the “Magic 93.9” brand on WMIA-FM Miami on November 24. For its first full-week on the air, the station was ranked first in the 18-49 and second in 25-54 demos in the market.

WZJZ’s Hot AC format ranked tied for eighteenth in the Fort Myers market with a 1.5 share in the November 2023 Nielsen Audio ratings. The new format will target the station against a trio of higher ranked AC’s in Fort Myers Broadcasting’s duo of Soft AC “Wave 101.1” WAVV (second with a 5.7 share) and 96.9 WINK-FM (fifth with a 4.3 share) and Beasley’s “Sunny 106.3”
WJPT (sixth with a 4.1 share).

iHeartMedia has also been launching the “Magic” brand on HD subchannels across the country.

iHeartMedia Fort Myers announced today the debut of the new Magic 100.1, Tus Favoritas de Siempre, effective immediately.

The innovative Magic 100.1 brings a unique blend of content to listeners, as the station will broadcast a fusion of English-language music from the ‘80s and ‘90s anchored by engaging Spanish-language on-air personalities including El Gato, Ailyn Luaces, Tony Rodriguez, and Santiago Duarte. It’s a blend that caters to a wide spectrum of listeners in the Fort Myers area, and will feature a variety of hits from Whitney Houston, Marc Anthony, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Shakira, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and more.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of a first of its kind hybrid format in broadcast radio and streaming to reach and connect with Latino listeners here in Fort Myers. The new Magic 100.1 blends the biggest English hits with Spanish speaking hosts for an experience like no other,” said P.J. Gonzalez, Senior Vice President of Programming, iHeartLatino. “This station is more than just music. It celebrates the cultural diversity of Fort Myers. Get ready to experience a unique musical journey that resonates with the soul of our community.”

“After seeing the instant success in Miami, it is exciting to bring this format to Fort Myers. The unique blend of English language music and Spanish language personalities sounds amazing on-air and is very appealing to the diverse Hispanic community in Fort Myers,” said Chris Soechtig, Division President, iHeartMedia.

The station is currently featuring 5,000 songs in a row commercial free.

Full Programming Lineup:

El Gato 6 a.m. – 10 a.m.
Ailyn Luaces 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Tony Rodriguez 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Santiago Duarte 7 p.m. – 12 a.m.

This is actually rather impressive, I don’t think we’ve seen first week numbers like that in radio sense, honestly, I don’t know when. Only Chris huff would probably know that! But unlike a lot of the passing fads, this one might actually catch on, in very specific markets. I imagine, more Florida, and perhaps a few California flips eventually.

My guess is that it will be in more Hispanic oriented markets such as certain markets in Texas and California and even more markets in Florida. This is where iHeartMedia could possibly duplicate WMIA’s success.
