CBS will flip AAA “92.9 Dave-FM” WZGC Atlanta to Sports this fall.
As first reported by Rodney Ho of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, station GM Rick Caffrey told the station’s staffers that the move will occur in late September or early October. Terry Foxx, PD of sister “93.7 The Fan” KDKA-FM Pittsburgh has been named PD for the Atlanta station.
The new format will put the station in direct competition with Dickey Brothers’ “680 The Fan” WCNN/93.7 W229AG and Lincoln Financial Media’s “790 The Zone” WQXI. Will this move cause Dickey and Cumulus to blink and move The Fan to Cumulus’ 100.5 WNNX? Ho mentions in his column that CBS made an attempt at acquiring The Zone’s programming to move to 92.9.
Most surprising is the lack of domain registrations made prior to the announcement of the launch. SportsRadio929.com and SportsRadio929FM.com were registered anonymously this morning but are redirecting to 790 The Zone’s site.
The AAA format of Dave-FM will continue to air as is until the flip is made.
In a related announcement CBS stated that Doug Gottlieb, most recently of ESPN, will join the company. Among his duties will be to host 3-6pm on the national CBS Sports Radio upon its debut in January 2013.
