Flinn Broadcasting is breaking up its Memphis CHR simulcast of “The Q” 107.5 WHBQ-FM Germantown, TN and 96.1 WIVG Tunica, MS.
Update 4/11 7:00pm: The station ended the loop of “Blister In The Sun” at 4pm and relaunched as “96X“. Listener reports claim that the station is playing nothing but 90’s Alternative so far including 311, Everclear, Green Day and REM.
Update 4/11 1:00pm: 96.1 has dropped its simulcast of WHBQ-FM and is looping The Violent Femme’s “Blister In The Sun“.
Original Report 4/10: WIVG will imminently shift to Alternative as “96X“. The move resurrects a brand that has been used previously on two stations in the market. What is now Clear Channel’s “Hallelujah 95.7” WHAL-FM was Alternative with the “96X” brand and WRXQ calls from 1994 to 1999. 92.9 WMFS would rebrand its Alternative/Active Rock hybrid format as “93X” in 2001 and use the X brand until its flip to Sports in 2009.
The 96.1 signal rimshots Memphis from the south. It’s Class A signal operates with 4.1kW at 246 meters.
Flinn has also dropped its Country “Memphis Kissin Country” format from 1430 WOWW/97.7 W249BN. The duo is currently simulcasting Mighty Media Group’s “95.3 The Rebel” WEBL after running the “Kissin” Country format from December until this week.
I think they went to AAA “the Pig” after about nine months. Also, WIVG is a C3, not an A—on account of its tower height.
As of 4pm we have a format. It’s been all classic 90s so far.
Please bring back Stone Temple Mike and David the Worm back !
Wow what an awesome station that got lost in the shuffle.
