Original Report 8/8: Greater Media’s 105.1 WMGC Detroit is on the verge of yet another rebranding.
The station dropped its previous “Magic” identity last October with its annual move to Christmas music. On December 26, the station relaunched as “Soft Rock 105.1” with an emphasis on promoting less talk than its competitors, which includes the mostly lost act of calling out their competitors by name.

Now the station is identifying simply by its 105.1 frequency on the air as it prepares to change its moniker to “Today’s 105.1“. Todays1051.com and all other domain extensions was registered yesterday by Thomas Bender, the Senior Vice President of Greater Media Interactive. The domain currently redirects to their local Detroit cluster site. A blank Facebook page is currently live at Facebook.com/Todays1051.
WMGC registered at 3.1 share in the July PPM monthlies down from a high of 3.9 in May.
Over on the Michigan Buzzboard they’ve been scratching their heads about why this station has been going without branding – until a member there posted a link to this article. Now they’re saying it’s a dumb move.
