After ten days of stunting as “Missy-FM“, iHeartMedia has flipped former Urban AC “Kiss 92” WKSA Moyock, NC/Norfolk, VA to Classic Hip-Hop “92.1 The Beat“.
The station is positioning itself as “The Hampton Road’s Throwback Hip-Hop & R&B” and launching with 5,000 songs commercial-free. As explained below the move is intended to squeeze Entercom Urban AC “95.7 R&B” WVKL.
Update 12/26: At 10am today, WKSA began stunting as “Missy-FM” playing nothing but Missy Elliott and other local stars such as Timbaland and Aaliyah.
Elliott, a local native of Portsmouth, VA, is voicing imaging stating that she’s taken over the station for the weekend. WKSA is also teasing an announcement coming Monday, January 5 at 9:00am.
Original Report 12/23: A change appears to be coming to iHeartMedia Urban AC “Kiss 92” 92.1 WKSA Moyock, NC/Norfolk, VA.
TheBeatVA.com was registered by iHeart last week and is redirecting to WKSA’s site. With the company already owning Urban “103 Jamz” 102.9 WOWI in the market as well as a CHR and Rhythmic AC, the only other place for the Beat branding to go is Classic Hip-Hop.
WKSA held a 1.8 share of the Norfolk audience in the November 2014 Nielsen Audio PPM ratings; well below Entercom’s market leading Urban AC “95.7 R&B” WVKL’s 13.4 share.
92.1 has been “The Beat” before. As WBHH in the early ’00s, it had an all-hip-hop format that was positioned to the left of WOWI.
and those calls are available…
It looks like its going to be a long weekend from the way they she put it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they get them back once the stunning ends.
The call letters, that is.
It’s not just Missy. I’m also hearing tons of Timbaland (also a native of Hampton Roads), Aaliyah and Ginuwine, who were all Timbaland’s proteges in the 90’s.
Any Neptunes/Pharrell/N.E.R.D. stuff?
