Following the departure of Sheila Hamilton last week, Alpha Media News/Talk 101.1 KXL-FM Portland has appointed Lucinda Kay and Cooper Banks as co-anchors for “Portland’s Afternoon News” from 4-7pm weekdays. Kay has worked as a television reporter and talk show host in Spokane and as a communications consultant. She has worked for KXL on a freelance basis since 2016. Banks joins the station from Entercom News/Talk 98.1 KMBZ-FM Kansas City where he worked as a producer, reporter, and news anchor. Sheila Hamilton has exited her position as afternoon anchor at Alpha Media News/Talk 101.1 KXL-FM Portland. Hamilton co-hosted mornings at sister AAA 101.9 KINK from 2002 until April 2017. She added anchoring duties for KXL’s 4-7pm news block in 2016. She came to radio after working as a reporter at television stations in Salt Lake City and Portland from 1984-2000. Hamilton told Willamette Week that she is waiting until final negotiations have been resolved to issue a statement explaining what happened.

Art Bell’s return to radio has begun picking up some larger affiliates as Alpha Media’s 101.1 KXL-FM Portland announces it will pickup the show when it debuts next Monday. Other new additions to Bell’s affiliate list are Great Plains Media’s “Cities 92.9” WRPW Bloomington, IL and Bell Media’s (No Relation) 1010 CFRB Toronto. Larry Wilson is merging his two operating companies into one and acquiring another. Alpha Broadcasting and L&L Broadcasting will merge to become Alpha Media, while purchasing Main Line Broadcasting’s 19 stations in four markets for $57 million. Both Alpha and L&L were founded by Larry Wilson sharing the same management teams with L&L already operating Alpha’s stations. Following the completion of the two transactions the company will operate 68 radio stations in 12 markets. L&L’s deal to acquire Main Line was first reported in February by Tom Taylor Now. News/Talk KXL is now exclusively on 101.1, Sports “The Game” is on 750, and 95.5 has debuted its new format as “Live 95.5” with the prerequisite 10,000 songs in row commercial free. Alpha is describing the station as Next Generation AC targetting women 27-38. Keola, currently APD/MD and afternoon host at sister Country 98.7 KUPL has been named Program Director of the new station.
