iHeartMedia has completed its first round of upgrades for Country “101.7 The Bull” WBWL Lynn/Boston and has applied for a second, bigger upgrade. The first series of moves saw WBWL eliminate its directional antenna at One Financial Center in Boston with 1.7kW at 191 meters, while sister 101.5 WWBB Providence, RI dropped from a Class B with 13.5kW at 290 meters to a directional Class A with 4.9kW at 110 meters and 101.9 WCIB downgraded from 50kw at 146 meters to 13kW at 145 meters with a directional notch away from Boston. With those changes now built out, iHeart is now proposing a bigger upgrade for WBWL. WBWL will relocate to the Medford, MA tower it abandoned nearly a decade ago, but upgrade to a Class B1 with 13.5kW at 138 meters. This move will strongly increase WBWL’...[Read More]

Top 10 Format Changes Of 2014

For our review of 2014 we decided to focus on what we know best. Let’s look back at the ten most influential format changes and rebrandings of 2014. 10 106.9 WCCC Hartford hasn’t been a powerhouse in quite some time. But it was one of the few remaining relics to a previous era. The longtime Rocker and its AM sister operated up against three big clusters, but couldn’t keep up in the end. It was quite appropriate in a way for its end to come with a sale to Educational Media Foundation and flip on August 1 to the Christian AC “K-Love” network. The first station to give Howard Stern a job in mornings back in 1979, was now at the opposite end of the programming spectrum. With no terrestrial signal to fill the void, a few former WCCC staffers launched a webcaster to...[Read More]

Clear Channel To Modify Three Signals To Upgrade 101.7 Boston

Clear Channel has applied to downgrade a pair of signals in New England to upgrade one in Boston. As first outlined by Northeast Radio Watch, Country “101.7 The Bull” WBWL Lynn/Boston will remain at its current location at One Financial Center in Boston with 1.7kW at 191 meters, but convert to a non-directional antenna to increase its coverage of the southern suburbs of Boston (Coverage Map). To make the upgrade of WBWL happen, two stations will make significant downgrades. Classic Hits “B101” 101.5 WWBB Providence will drop from a Class B with 13.5kW at 290 meters to a directional Class A with 4.9kW at 110 meters from the tower of sister News/Talk 920 WHJJ (Coverage Map). On Cape Cod, soon to be acquired Classic Hits “Cool 102” 101.9 WCIB Falmouth will ...[Read More]

Do Social Media Likes Lead To Ratings: Part 1

One week after the launch of Country “94.7 Nash-FM” New York the first thing we noticed were the amount of people that quickly began following the station on social media. Seven days into operation WNSH already has 8894 likes on Facebook and 2356 Twitter followers*. To put it into comparison, top rated AC “106.7 Lite-FM” WLTW has just 18,442 likes. The most liked New York radio station on Facebook belongs to “Hot 97” WQHT with 275,516. While we are unable to parse any demographic info from the amount of likes, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that a younger skewing station has 10 times as many followers as an office friendly background station. We’ve selected eight stations that launched new formats in PPM markets over the past month. Some ...[Read More]

101.7 Boston Evolves To Dance

After just five months on the air, Clear Channel’s Variety Hits “101.7 The Harbor” WHBA Boston is no more. The station flipped to Electronic Dance “Evolution 101.7” at 6pm this evening. The station is utilizing programming produced for the “Evolution” IHeartRadio channel. That channel is programmed by Pete Tong, the former BBC DJ who was hired last month by Clear Channel. Instant Insight: Nobody saw that coming. Evolution1017.com and 1017TheRock.com were both registered yesterday by a Tom Kenilworth in Newark, OH as Clear Channel steps up their efforts on the registration front. Is this permanent or a stunt? We’re leaning towards the latter as this looks like a way to get Greater Media to reconsider their possible intentions to take 96.9 WTKK...[Read More]

The Talk1017 Boston Chronicles

The Boston market is abuzz today over the registration of Talk1017.com redirecting to Clear Channel’s “Talk 1200” WXKS. Only one problem. There is nothing to connect the domain to Clear Channel. The domain was registered anonymously using GoDaddy’s Domains By Proxy and is hosted on Godaddy’s server using a frame based redirect to display content from WXKS. That said it is possible that eventually the domain could be moved to Clear Channel’s servers, but for those outlets that have in-house reasons to gripe about Clear Channel’s purchase of their sister station and love nothing more than to give them negative publicity there is as much to connect the company to Talk1017.com as there is to Radio1017.com. Unfortunately, the latter domain was registere...[Read More]
