Country Superstars Debuts In Raleigh

Update 1/2: WFNL-FM returned to the air on New Years Day as “Country Superstars 102.3“. Update 12/2: The sale of Classic Hits “Kix 102.9” WKIX-FM Raleigh and 98.7 W254AS Louisburg from McClatchey Broadcadcasting Company to Curtis Media and the accompanying divestiture of 102.3 WFNL-FM (Formerly WWPL) Smithfield to Richard Heilmann Sr.’s Triangle Marketing Associates have closed. Curtis states it intends to retain the current format on WKIX-FM. Meanwhile, WFNL-FM has dropped the Bluegrass format it has run as a placeholder since September. 102.3 is currently dark, while TMA moves the station into new studios. Curtis Launches Bluegrass FM In Raleigh

Curtis Media has flipped 102.3 WFNL-FM (formerly WWPL) Smithfield/Raleigh, NC to “Bluegrass 102.3“. The launch of the station coincides with the start of the International Bluegrass Music Association convention in Raleigh this coming Monday and the Wide Open Bluegrass festival next weekend. Curtis Media Group Executive Vice President, Trip Savery stated in the press release, “Our commitment to Bluegrass started when WPTF hired Flatt & Scruggs in 1952. Pulse 102 Raleigh Moves To 96.9

Curtis Media has flipped 96.9 WBZJ Goldsboro, NC to CHR “Pulse FM“. The move comes as 102.3 WWPL Smithfield, NC is about to be spun-off necessitating a need for a new signal to cover the Raleigh half of the market. The format will continue to air on 102.5 WPLW Hillsborough/Durham. WBZJ dropped its Urban AC format and temporarily returned to its previous Regional Mexican “La Ley” format in March when 101.1 WYMY Burlington was off the air due to an ice storm. The 96.9 signal increases the format’s coverage in Eastern North Carolina as well as Raleigh proper with its 100kW at 300 meter signal.
