Classic Hip-Hop Hot 102.5 Minneapolis Debuts

iHeartMedia launched Classic Hip-Hop “Hot 102.5” K273BH Fridley/97.1 KTCZ-HD3 Minneapolis at 3:00pm today after an hour of stunting with songs featuring Hot in the title. Debuting with Notorious BIG/Puff Daddy “Mo Money Mo Problems” and DMX “Party Up”, the station is launching with 5,000 songs commercial free. Lucas Phelan, afternoon host at sister CHR 101.3 KDWB will add additional duties as Program Director of “Hot 102.5“. The translator had been running a loop redirecting EMF’s “Air 1” audience over to its new home at 92.9 W225AP St. Paul for the past month. The choice of a Classic Hip-Hop format means Minneapolis will remain one of the few major markets without a Commercial Rhythmic CHR or Urban station. iHeartMedia/Minneapolis debu...[Read More]

FCC Applications 9/25

Note To Readers: Starting this week we will be breaking the FCC Applications column into two parts. This part will continue to include station modifications and call letter changes. The second part to be published on Fridays will be a rundown of all station sales. The big story this week was the FCC denying Way Media’s application to relocate 91.5 W218CR Central City, KY to 103.7 in Tell City, IN where it would’ve rebroadcasted Hancock Communications’ 1230 WTCJ Tell City. The “Tell City Waiver” would’ve enabled Way Media to not go through multiple hops to relocate W218CR to its intended destination. The FCC decided that any sweeping change to its policy would better be served via a rulemaking. More details at BroadcastLawBlog.com. Station Moves After com...[Read More]

Translator Report 8/28

The Clear Channel/EMF bulk translator move to the IDS Center in Minneapolis has hit a few hitches. The planned moves of 93.3 W227BF Shoreview, 97.7 K249ED Albertville, 99.9 K260BA Coon Rapids, and 102.5 K273BH Fridley have been hit with informal objections to move by a Jeff Sibert. The move of 97.7 is also being objected by United Audio Corp., the owner of 97.5 KNXR Rochester, MN. Northpine.com has more details on the move, including a part of history repeating itself. These petitions impacted Clear Channel’s frequency swap of 1130 KFAN and 100.3 KTLK earlier this month. A similar Clear Channel/EMF move in Baton Rouge is being protested as well. EMF has applied to upgrade 97.7 K249DV Baker, LA from 13 watts to 250 watts where it will simulcast Clear Channel’s 101.5 WYNK-HD2. Gu...[Read More]

Frequency Swap In Minneapolis

Update 8/15: The frequency swap took place as scheduled at 12am. KFAN moved from 1130 and its translator on 103.5 to 100.3. KTLK moved in reverse from 100.3 to 1130 and 103.5. The 103.5 translator will carry the News/Talk programming until the 102.5 translator is built. At that point, 103.5 will assume the programming currently heard on “The Score 690” KFXN. As part of the changes the current call letters will not make the move. When the dust settles 100.3 will become KFXN-FM. The KFAN-FM calls are held by Adult Alternative “Texas Rebel Radio” in Johnson City, TX. 1130 will become KTCN. Clear Channel retains the KTLK calls at its 1150 in Los Angeles. Update 8/12: As the 102.5 translator upgrade has not yet been approved by the FCC, KTLK’s programming will only...[Read More]

Translator Report 6/29

This past week has seen a lot of moves for translators with Clear Channel making moves to add new programming options in two major markets. In Minneapolis/St. Paul, Clear Channel is teaming with EMF Broadcasting to bring two translators to the top of the IDS Center in Minneapolis. Northpine.com reports 93.3 W227BF Shoreview, MN will upgrade from 10 to 99 watts and rebroadcast 97.1 KTCZ-HD2, while 102.5 K273BH Fridley, MN will jump from 41 to 250 watts rebroadcasting 101.3 KDWB-HD2. Clear Channel purchased 103.5 K278BP Cottage Grove, MN from EMF last year. It is used to rebroadcast Sports 1130 KFAN via 100.3 KTLK-HD2. Clear Channel and EMF are also working in tandem in Detroit. As part of the deal that gave Clear Channel access to 103.5 in Minneapolis last year, EMF gained programming contr...[Read More]
