103.7 W279AQ Mascoutah IL/KLOU-HD2 St. Louis had dropped their Rock “Louie 103.7” identity in November for Christmas Music. With the holiday season over the station has switched to Christian AC “Up 103.7“. The debut is the second launch with that format and brand name for iHeartMedia this week following its debut in Fort Collins CO on Saturday. The launch brings a commercial competitor to Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s duo of Christian AC “99.1 Joy-FM” KLJY and Christian CHR “Boost 101.9” K270BW/KLJY-HD2
In recent years a crosstown Christmas music battle would break out between CBS AC 102.5 KEZK and iHeartMedia Classic Hits 103.3 KLOU St. Louis. This year iHeart is trying a new strategy. Instead of dropping Classic Hits on the market leading KLOU, the company disposed of Rock “Louie 103.7” W279AQ Mascoutah IL/KLOU-HD2 and launched all-Christmas there. The new “Christmas 103.7” is promoting that it will operate commercial-free through the holidays. The prior “Louie” format was positioned to cut into Emmis’ duo of Rock 94.7 KSHE and Alternative “105.7 The Point” KPNT. Expect a new format on 103.7 in the new year.
Update 6/19: W279AQ has ended its Rick-Roll loop and flipped to Rock “Louie 103.7” at 1pm today. Positioned as “Man Up St. Louis”, the station is featuring core artists Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Green Day, Sick Puppies and Local H. Update 6/16: W279AQ is now looping Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” as it prepares to launch its new format. Clear Channel has added LouieRocks.com and 1037Louie.com to its previous domain registration of Louie1037.com. Depending on what form of Rock that depicts, it would place Louie in competition with Emmis’ trio of Rock 94.7 KSHE, Classic Rock “96.3 K-Hits” KIHT, or Active leaning Alternative “105.7 The Point” KPNT. Original Report 6/13: Just as it just did in Minneapolis, Clea...[Read More]
EMF Broadcasting is applying to bring another translator into Chicago proper. 101.5 W268AY Seward Township, IL has applied to relocate to the top of the Trump International Hotel where it would operate with 250 watts and rebroadcast Clear Channel’s 95.5 WNUA-HD3. A high profile translator move in New York is now retreating to Long Island, while non-commercial upgrades could bring new signals to Chicago and Los Angeles. Chicago Public Media has applied to move 91.3 W217BM Elgin, IL to the downtown Chicago where it will operate with 99 watts from the tower of 91.5 WBEZ. It obviously will not be remaining one frequency off of its originating station, but can use that move to establish itself in the new location and then jump to a clearer frequency, perhaps 91.9?. The move should establish a city signal for “Vocalo” which currently airs on WBEZ-HD2 and 89.5 WBEW Valparaiso, IN. Life On The Way Communications’ 91.1 K216FM Van Nuys, CA to the Hollywood Hills where its 10 watts will put a service contour over West Hollywood and Beverly H...[Read More]
