Eddie Volkman Joins WFXF For Mornings

Longtime Chicago morning host Eddie Volkman is joining Matrix Broadcasting Classic Rock “103.9 The Fox” WFXF Dundee IL in the northwest suburbs of Chicago for mornings. Volkman co-hosted mornings at CBS CHR “B96” WBBM-FM from 1986-1994 and 1997-2008. All but the first two years were with Joe ‘JoBo” Bohannon. Eddie and JoBo would return in 2011 to host mornings at CBS Classic Hits “104.3 K-Hits” WJMK for a year and almost joined Cumulus’ 94.7 WLS-FM in 2014 until Bohannon walked away from the deal. 103.9 W280EM Chicago/WTMX-HD2 segued to its “Groove” identity with a rebranded take on Smooth Jazz. Branded as “Contemporary Jazz For Chicago”, 103.9 debuted with David Sanborn’s “Chicago Song”. The translator debuted on Friday evening with Christmas Music with programming originating on 101.9 WTMX-HD2. Translator Applications It’s not the upgrade to 99 watts that 103.9 W280EM Chicago stated they were going to file for, however Windy City Broadcasting is seeking to increase power while lowering antenna height. The translator will shift from 15 watts at 536 meters to 17 watts at 341 meters from the John Hancock Tower in downtown Chicago (Coverage Map). Charles Crawford’s 94.1 W231CU Miami continues its move down the dial as it upgrades its signal. The next move will take it to 104.7 from the North Miami tower of ten full powered FM’s where it will operate with 99 watts at 231 meters rebroadcasting an HD subchannel of iHeartMedia’s 93.9 WMIA-FM (Coverage Map). FCC Applications 10/5: Translator On The Move Into Austin

Station Moves Beasley (Soon to be CBS) Sports 560 WQAM Miami has applied to relocate to the tower of Salem’s 1450 WOCN. The owners of the station’s tower site on Virginia Key notified WQAM and co-tenant 1360 WKAT earlier this year that their leases will not be renewed. At the new site where WQAM will join WKAT and WOCN it will drop its daytime power from its current 5kW to 4.1kW. Nighttime power will remain at 1kW. Cumulus AC “Sunny 97.5” WWSN Whitehall/Muskegon, MI applies to increase from 1.7kW at 130 meters to 3kW at 134.2 meters (Coverage Map). Chicago Translator Sold For $1 Million

CSN International has sold the CP for 103.9 W280EM Chicago to Windy City Broadcasting, LLC for $1 Million. Windy City Broadcasting, led by John Bridge of Sugar Grove, IL holds no other broadcast properties. Bridge is the head of the Chicago based Equity One Investment Fund. W280EM is licensed to operate with 8 watts at 450.2 meters from the top of the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago (Coverage Map). The sale agreement specified 91.5 WBEZ as the originating station for the translator at least for now.

The Fox Rocks Chicago’s NW Suburbs

The Mile High Station Trust has flipped Classic Hits “Y103.9” WWYW Dundee, IL to Classic Rock “103.9 The Fox“. The station, which had been running Tom Kent’s “24/7 Fun” network made the switch at 3:00pm with Jimi Hendrix’ “Foxy Lady” kicking off the new format. The station has applied for new WFXF call letters. “103.9 The Fox” will feature a mostly local on-air lineup. Ben Herman joins the station for mornings. Ryan Wild, PD of sister AC “Star 105.5” WZSR will be PD of the Fox and host middays. JP will host afternoon drive and the syndicated Nights with Alice Cooper will be heard in the evening.
