The former “104.7 The Oasis” W284BQ Detroit has been donated by Radio Power Inc. to Family Life Broadcasting. Family Life will use the translator to rebroadcast 1030 WUFL Sterling Heights, an AM daytimer that carries Family Life’s Christian preaching. While it has not been done yet, the FCC application for the donation indicates Family Life will apply to move the translator to the 1030 tower to operate with 250 watts. W284BQ has been silent since last October, when it was forced off the air due to interference complaints by Clear Channel’s WIOT Toledo. The application to move to WUFL’s tower site will move the translator further away from Toledo.
Martz Communications has ceased operations of its pair of HD fed translators in Detroit. While Smooth Jazz “The Oasis” had been operating on HD only while awaiting its move to 92.7, Modern Rock “94.3 The Bone” had just added the syndicated Bubba The Love Sponge for mornings. Both station’s Facebook pages feature the same statement: “All good things must come to an end. We’re sorry to say that The Oasis has ceased operations today. Thanks for your support Detroit. You’re the best.” Bone PD Holly Hutton added, “Hey – Just wanted to say Thank you to everyone who listened and supported us. I know we had signal issues…but my personal experience at this station was a positive one. This company really celebrated true radio pr...[Read More]

It’s not every day that you see a full powered station traded for a translator. Cumulus and EMF Broadcasting made such a deal this week with Cumulus sending Oldies 102.3 WFVL-FM Lumberton, NC to EMF for 100.7 K264AS Mooringsport, LA. The translator, which serves the Shreveport market has a construction permit to move to downtown Shreveport with 250 watts. Following the FCC decision to force “104.7 The Oasis” W284BQ Detroit off the air until it can find a new frequency, Radio Power Inc. has applied to move the translator to 93.5 where it will operate with 99 watts. The FCC has ordered Martz Communications’ Smooth Jazz “104.7 The Oasis” W284BQ Detroit off the air due to interference against Clear Channel’s WIOT Toledo, OH. The translator, which debuted in April, had claimed that it had resolved the interference by offering smartphones with Clear Channel’s IHeartRadio app to those who had complained to the FCC about the interference. Read the whole FCC order here. Clear Channel has been on the other side of the battle in the two other major translator interference battles this year. Update 4/20: Martz has launched the programming on its two Detroit translators exactly as we reported last month. 94.3 W232CA (The former W230BI) debuts as Modern Rock “94.3 The Bone” with programming originating at 107.5 WGPR-HD3. The new format is promising to be nothing but music without the Canadian content required by “89X” 88.7 CIMX. The station’s website includes a harsh attack on the Canadian content and the fact that the station is owned by the phone company. That being BellMedia, the former CTVglobemedia recently acquired by Bell Canada. The station is also taking potshots at Greater Media’s Rock 101.1 WRIF in sweepers. W284BQ returns Smooth Jazz to Detroit as “104.7 The Oasis” with the programming delivered by Broadcast Architectur...[Read More]
