Alpha Media has flipped Classic Hip-Hop “G105.1” WGHL Shepherdsville/Louisville KY to Alternative “Alt 105.1“. Concurrent with the launch, Urban AC “Magic 101.3” WMJM Jeffersontown has shifted its playlist for the holiday weekend in a throwback direction focused mainly on Hip-Hop and some R&B from the 1990s and early 2000s. The changes give Louisville an Alternative formatted station for the first time in well over a decade and consolidate the Urban targeted audience in the market. WGHL will retain the syndicated Brooke & Jubal show in mornings. WGHL registered a 1.7 share in the Spring 2018 Nielsen Audio ratings, while WMJM held a 3.7 share.
Alpha Media is bringing its first Classic Hip-Hop station in line with the branding utilized at its others. “Old School 105.1” WGHL Shepherdsville/Louisville rebranded this morning as “G105.1” with the name and logo used by the company in Biloxi and Savannah. Payne will program Urban “B96.5” WGZB, Urban AC “Magic 101.3” WMJM and Classic Hip-Hop “Old School 105.1” WGHL. In addition to his six year stint overseeing Radio-One’s Baltimore programming from 2009 through September 2015, Payne spent time in the company programming 93.9 WKYS Washington DC and the company’s Detroit stations. Just three and a half months after launching Classic Hits “105.1 GHL” WGHL Shepherdsville/Louisville, Alpha Media has quickly turned around and flipped the station to Classic Hip-Hop “Old School 105.1“. The new format joins an Alpha Media Louisville Urban block consisting of Urban “B96.5” WGZB and Urban AC “Magic 101.3” WMJM. The change comes despite a slight uptick for the Classic Hits format versus its previous Soft AC format in its only ratings book as WGHL registered a 1.8 share in the Fall 2014 Nielsen Audio ratings as opposed to a 1.6 in the Summer. Alpha Media has dropped the Soft AC “Easy Rock 105.1” format on WESI Shepherdsville/Louisville and flipped the station to Classic Hits. The station is now branded as “105.1 GHL” with new WGHL call letters pending. WGHL is launching with the usual 10,000 songs-in-a-row commercial free. It joins Summit Media’s Rock leaning Classic Hits “107.7 The Eagle” WSFR and W&B Broadcasting’s rimshot 103.5 WAKY in the format. In the Summer 2014 Nielsen Audio ratings, “Easy Rock 105.1” was the lowest rated FM station in the Louisville market with just a 1.6 share of the audience.
Larry Wilson is merging his two operating companies into one and acquiring another. Alpha Broadcasting and L&L Broadcasting will merge to become Alpha Media, while purchasing Main Line Broadcasting’s 19 stations in four markets for $57 million. Both Alpha and L&L were founded by Larry Wilson sharing the same management teams with L&L already operating Alpha’s stations. Following the completion of the two transactions the company will operate 68 radio stations in 12 markets. L&L’s deal to acquire Main Line was first reported in February by Tom Taylor Now. Among the artists heard on the station are America, Gloria Estefan, The Beatles, Lionel Richie, and Eric Carmen.
