Top 10 Format Changes Of 2014

For our review of 2014 we decided to focus on what we know best. Let’s look back at the ten most influential format changes and rebrandings of 2014. 10 106.9 WCCC Hartford hasn’t been a powerhouse in quite some time. But it was one of the few remaining relics to a previous era. The longtime Rocker and its AM sister operated up against three big clusters, but couldn’t keep up in the end. It was quite appropriate in a way for its end to come with a sale to Educational Media Foundation and flip on August 1 to the Christian AC “K-Love” network. The first station to give Howard Stern a job in mornings back in 1979, was now at the opposite end of the programming spectrum. With no terrestrial signal to fill the void, a few former WCCC staffers launched a webcaster to...[Read More]

Univision Gets Hot In San Francisco

Update 3/17: After a weekend of capturing America’s imagination with the loop of “Hot In Herre”, the Bay Area won’t be completely cooling off as Univision officially launched “Hot 105.7“. Chuy Gomez, who exited Clear Channel’s 106.1 KMEL morning slot last August after twenty years with the station, will join Hot for afternoons. He will be reunited with former co-host DJ Mind Motion, who was let go by KMEL last November. Positioned as “San Fran’s #1 For The Most Hip Hop & R&B”, the new format is attacking KMEL more than KYLD with an Urban format focusing on Latino listeners much like sister “98.5 The Beat” KBBT San Antonio. How #Nelly1057 Became A Viral Sensation

It was just supposed to be like any other format change stunt that takes place dozens of times each year across the country. Univision’s “Latino Mix” 105.7 KVVF Santa Clara/100.7 KVVZ San Rafael, CA began looping Nelly’s “Hot In Herre” at 3pm on Friday in preparation of a flip. There was nothing truly unique to the stunt. Just two weeks ago, Univision made a similar flip in Albuquerque as KKRG looped Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” for over four straight days before relaunching as Classic Hip-Hop “Yo 101.3“. WRWN Savannah, GA is currently stunting with Irish music for St. Patrick’s Day with nary a mention online. Even the use of “Hot In Herre” has been done before. 93.3 KXMG Austin (now KGSR) did the e...[Read More]
