FCC Report 10/15: WBBM On The Move

AM Changes CBS Radio News 780 WBBM Chicago has applied to vacate its tower site of the last 75 years and co-locate at the site of sister Sports "670 The Score" WSCR and SBS' "La Ley 107.9" WLEY-FM Aurora. From its new location WBBM will drop from 50kW day/night to 35kW day/42kW night but with the taller tower should come close to duplicating its current coverage. With WBBM's simulcast partner 105.9 WCFS Elmwood Park being the home to most of its in-market listening it is doubtful most WBBM listeners even notice the change. WBBM currently operates from a 55 acre site adjacent to the intersection of Interstate 290 and Illinois 390 in Itasca IL. Likely valued in the tens or hundreds of millions this is not the first time the station has sought a potential move. In 1988, the adjacent Ro...[Read More]

WCKG Update

Now that we know that Steve Dahl will debut on 104.3 WJMK this coming Monday morning, what will happen on WCKG? The image above was uploaded today to WCKG’s webserver, however we’re not 100% willing to bet on All-Christmas debuting. Fresh1059.com is now pointing to the Intertech Media servers that hosts all of CBS Radio’s sites. Thanks to ChicagolandRadioAndMedia.com for the tip.

WCKG Update: Steve Dahl & Bulls Find New Homes

In Sundays edition of the Chicago Tribune, Phil Rosenthal reports that Steve Dahl will make his move to mornings on WJMK “104.3 Jack-FM“. To promote Dahl’s move to so-called Jack FM, WCKG plans to pre-empt nearly its entire programming schedule with “Best of Steve Dahl” clips, beginning Monday night. Dahl also is set to continue to do his afternoon show on the station through Friday. Additionally, the Chicago Bulls will move their game broadcasts from WCKG to WMVP “ESPN Radio 1000” because of the pending flip. The Bulls had left WMVP for WCKG before the 2006-07 season, but after one year will move back.

Could WCKG Be Rocking?

We’ve previously discussed the rumored changes coming to CBS FM Talker 105.9 WCKG in Chicago. Unlike the previous domains, CBS Radio itself has registered a pair of domains related to past rock stations in the market: 1059wmet.com – 95.5 WMET was Metromedia’s AOR in Chicago from 1976 until 1986, much like then sisters WMMS Cleveland, WMMR Philadelphia, KMET Los Angeles, and WNEW New York. The WMET calls are currently located at 1160 in Gaithersburg, MD, but attaching an -FM suffix is feasible. 1059theblaze.com – WWBZ, 103.5 The Blaze was a short-lived Rocker from its launch in April 1991 until its sale to Evergreen Media in 1994 when it was relaunched as WRCX “Rock 103.5” What both stations had in common was their primary competitor: 97.9 The Loop. In it...[Read More]
