Urban One Urban “Power 107.5” WCKX Columbus OH has added a second signal in the market as the company flips Classic Hip-Hop “Boom 106.3” WBMO London OH to a simulcast. The addition of the 106.3 rimshot signal enhances WCKX’s coverage on the west side of the Columbus market as Power has fallen behind iHeartMedia’s “106.7 The Beat” WZCB Dublin in the most recent PPM monthly. WZCB registered a 3.6 share in the October monthly, while WCKX held a 3.3 share down from a 4.0 just two months ago. The Classic Hip-Hop format on WBMO held a 1.5 share. Boom had launched on 106.3 in November 2015 after Urban AC “Magic 106.3” WXMG moved to 95.5.
Radio-One has launched its fifth Classic Hip-Hop station (and first in almost a year) as 106.3 WXMG London/Columbus OH debuted as “Boom 106.3” at 12pm. We reported yesterday that Radio-One had registered the domains and social media accounts for the new format. WXMG’s previous Urban AC format moved to Radio-One’s newly acquired 95.5 WZOH-FM on Thursday. Radio-One began the Classic Hip-Hop format trend in the fall of 2014 with the massive growth at KROI Houston and quickly duplicated the format in Atlanta, Dallas and Philadelphia. When the “Boom” branded stations began to come back to earth, the company shied away from any additional transitions to the format until today.
Radio-One is purchasing Wilks Broadcasting’s two remaining Columbus, OH stations for $2 million. What were Sports “95.5 The Game” WZOH-FM Lancaster and Classic Country “K107.1” WHOK-FM Circleville will join a Radio-One cluster that includes Urban AC “Magic 106.3” WXMG London and Urban “Power 107.5” WCKX Columbus. Wilks sold their other Columbus station, Classic Rock “QFM 96” 96.3 WLVQ to Saga earlier this month. Radio-One began operating both stations at 12am this morning and begun making programming changes. The Urban AC programming of WXMG is now simulcasting on 95.5 in preparation of moving there completely as “Magic 95.5“. 107.1 WHOK-FM will flip to Gospel “Joy 107.1” on Monday, November 16 at 5:0...[Read More]
Radio-One has moved Urban AC “Magic 98.9” WXMG Columbus, OH to 106.3 displacing Gospel “Joy 106.3” WJYD. 98.9 has flipped to Variety Hits “Jack-FM“. The move transfers the Urban AC format to a weaker signal targeting Columbus from 23 miles to the west, while 98.9 is located directly in Columbus. The move follows Clear Channel’s flip of 93.3 WLZT from AC to Oldies on September 6. In addition to WXMG and WJYD, Radio-One also operates Urban “Power 107.5” WCKX in the Columbus market.
