Bluewater Broadcasting has flipped CHR “Hits 107.1” W296AI/WQKS-HD3 Montgomery AL to Classic Rock “107.1 The Vault“. The change reverses the change made in September 2015 when Bluewater replaced The Vault with the CHR format. It comes just after the Hits brand had its best ratings period as it rose from a 0.5 share to 0.8 in the Spring 2017 Nielsen Audio ratings. The reversal puts the station back in direct competition with Cumulus Rock “95.1 The Fox” WXFX.

The new format replaces Classic Rock “107.1 The Vault” and was paired with a signal upgrade from 38 watts at 68 meters to 99 watts at 250 meters (Coverage Map). W296AI brings a direct format competitor to Cumulus’ “Y102” 101.9 WHHY and is taking shots online about being locally owned and operated as opposed to Y102’s operations reporting to Cumulus headquarters in Atlanta. Hits 107.1 is launching with commercial-free weekends.

Billed as “Montgomery’s Lite & Easy Favorites” the station is billing Madonna, Whitney Houston, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, The Beatles, Bryan Adams and Chicago as core artists. This past week has seen a lot of moves for translators with Clear Channel making moves to add new programming options in two major markets. In Minneapolis/St. Paul, Clear Channel is teaming with EMF Broadcasting to bring two translators to the top of the IDS Center in Minneapolis. Northpine.com reports 93.3 W227BF Shoreview, MN will upgrade from 10 to 99 watts and rebroadcast 97.1 KTCZ-HD2, while 102.5 K273BH Fridley, MN will jump from 41 to 250 watts rebroadcasting 101.3 KDWB-HD2. Clear Channel purchased 103.5 K278BP Cottage Grove, MN from EMF last year. It is used to rebroadcast Sports 1130 KFAN via 100.3 KTLK-HD2. Clear Channel and EMF are also working in tandem in Detroit.
