K296GB had been Classic Rock “107.1 The Brew” until the launch of sister “93.7 The River” KYRV last month. It has been simulcasting Talk 650 KSTE since then. Lynda Clayton, who hosted middays on “Smooth Jazz 94.7” KSSJ Fair Oaks from 1997 until its flip to Alternative in 2010, will host on the new station.

Billed as “107.1 The Holiday Brew“, the translator has picked up the iHeart Christmas Rock feed. While the station states it will return to the Classic Rock format after the holidays, why would a station with a 0.1 share stunt just to return to the status quo?
Curtiss Johnson is returning to Sacramento after a brief stint in Chicago to serve as SVP/Programming for iHeartMedia. Johnson spent 20 years programming in the market at Entercom’s Classic Rock “96.9 The Eagle” KSEG, Active Rock “98 Rock” 98.5 KRXQ and now defunct Alternative 106.5 KWOD. As first expected last week, iHeartMedia flipped Alternative “Alt 107.1” K296GB North Highlands/KQJK-HD2 Roseville CA to Classic Rock “107.1 The Brew” at 12am this morning. The translator, which serves to northeastern suburbs of Sacramento, gives an in-format competitor to Entercom’s “96.9 The Eagle” KSEG. The Eagle is usually ranked in the top 3 stations in the market; dropping from first to second in the Holiday 2015 Nielsen Audio PPM ratings with a 9.1 share. The Brew is launching with the usual 10,000 songs commercial-free.

The station is running the Premium Choice “Alt Project” programming including Aly in middays, Klinger in afternoons, and Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx in evenings. Mornings are unfilled on the station’s schedule. The new format is designed to chip away at Entercom’s “Radio 94.7” KKDO.
The FCC has begun to clear out the list of translator applications from 2003 that have been stuck in limbo while LPFM rules were set.
