Saga Launches The Bay In Portland ME

Saga Communications has flipped 1490 WBAE Portland/1400 WVAE Biddeford ME to Soft AC “107.1/93.5 The Bay“. The new format is positioning as “Easy Favorites” and creates a flanker for Hot AC “Coast 93.1” WMGX and Classic Hits “Rewind 100.9” WYNZ against Townsquare Media AC 94.9 WHOM. WBAE and 107.1 W296CZ Portland had been running a Talk format while WVAE (which recently changed call letters from WGIN) had been simulcasting News/Talk 560 WGAN and has now launched its 93.5 W228BE translator serving the southern portions of Portland and the Old Orchard Beach/Saco area.

2015 Post Christmas Format Change Rundown & Watchlist

If there’s one thing we know to expect every November most of the same stations that flipped to Christmas music last year and the year before that and the year before that will do so again this year. That is the primary reason we are no longer producing the list of all stations playing Christmas music. It is very predictable what station will play Christmas music in each market and that they will then return to their regular playlist as soon as the calendar changes to December 26. But there are still the stations that use the holiday music to clear out their previous audience and build attention for a format change after the holidays. Saga Prepping Portland ME Changes

Saga Communications has begun a shuffle of their AM properties in Portland ME. Standards “1490 The Bay” WBAE Portland has dropped its format and has begun simulcasting Talk 970 WZAN. On January 1, WZAN’s programming will be heard exclusively on 1490. The move of WZAN will make room for ESPN Radio on 970. ESPN is currently heard in the market on Atlantic Coast Radio’s 95.9 WPEI Saco in overnights and weekends. Saga registered ESPNPortland.com in May.

WBAE Returns To Standards

Saga Communications Talk “AM 1490” WBAE Portland has returned to Soft AC/Standards. Once again billed as “1490 The Bay“, the station is utilizing programming from Westwood One’s Adult Standards network. The change removes Bob & Tom, Clark Howard, and Dave Ramsey from the market. WBAE previously ran an Adult Standards format from 1999 to 2009. Until March of this year it simulcasted on sister 1400 WVAE (now WGIN) Biddeford.

FCC Update 7/16

Cumulus’ 97.9 KNRQ-FM Eugene, OR has filed a request for expedited approval to shift its pending move into Aloha in the Portland market to a new tower site. Claiming that it needs to be built before August 1 in order to close on its swap with EMF Broadcasting of 97.5 KYGA (was KRUZ-FM) Goleta CA and 103.7 KXPC-FM Harrisburg OR before the California license renewal deadline. If approved, KNRQ will now be built as a C1 with 9.7kW at 472 meters from the KGW-TV owned tower (instead of 50kw at 387 meters from a different location). Cumulus states it can build the new facility quickly, but if the new application is not approved before the August 1 deadline it will delay construction until at least December. Saga News/Talk 550 WGAN Portland, ME has added an additional signal in the market. 1400 WVAE Biddeford, ME has shifting from simulcasting Talk 1490 WBAE Portland to WGAN. WVAE helps boost WGAN’s coverage in York County, ME south of Portland. WGAN operates with a directional 5kW. WVAE runs with a non-directional 1kW.
