ESPN Radio will move to a new Atlanta home on August 17. Dickey Broadcasting’s “1230 The Fan 2” WFOM will become the new Atlanta home for ESPN’s talk and play-by-play programming replacing Lincoln Financial Media’s (soon to be Entercom’s) “790 The Zone” WQXI. Some ESPN programming will also be heard on Dickey’s “680/93.7 The Fan” WCNN/W229AG. WFOM had been carrying CBS Sports Radio network programming. No word on what will go to WQXI following the loss of ESPN.
Hot AC “Star 94” WSTR Atlanta Operations Manager/Program Director Scott Lindy has departed the Lincoln Financial Media station. With the deal for Entercom to acquire Lincoln Financial Media is stuck in regulatory review, current Lincoln Financial Media VP/Programming John Dimick will add day-to-day programming of WSTR and sister “ESPN 790 The Zone” WQXI to his duties until the acquisition becomes final. Lindy joined WSTR in October 2010 after previously programming iHeartMedia Country “94.9 The Bull” WUBL Atlanta.
The Entercom/Lincoln Financial Media deal has been filed with the FCC. To comply with market cap limits in Denver, Sports “104.3 The Fan” KKFN Longmont will be placed in the Pikes Peak Trust run by Elliot Evers for divestiture to a third party. The remainder of the Lincoln Financial Media stations will begin to be operated by Entercom via Time Brokerage Agreement on January 15 or two days after DOJ approval of the deal, whichever is the latter of the two. This morning Entercom shocked the industry with their acquisition of Lincoln Financial Media for $105 million. Entercom acquired fifteen stations and a translator for less money than Steel City Media paid for Wilks four station in Kansas City earlier this year, a smaller market than any of the Lincoln stations. To show how much station prices have dropped, the price is nearly equal to the amount Greater Media paid for Lincoln’s three stations in Charlotte, NC in 2008. In a move that usually doesn’t happen so close to the start of a season, the Atlanta Falcons will have a new FM home for the games in 2014. CBS Sports “92.9 The Game” WZGC will replace Lincoln Financial Media Hot AC “Star 94” WSTR as the FM home for the team’s broadcasts starting with the team’s third preseason game on Saturday, August 23. Broadcasts will continue to originate at Lincoln Financial’s “ESPN 790 The Zone” WQXI. The move follows WQXI dropping all local programming in favor of the national ESPN Radio lineup in May.
