Blount Broadcasting Company launched Sports “Rocky Top Sports” 850 WKVL Knoxville/100.9 W267CK Maryville TN today. Rocky Top Sports will feature Jayson Swain in mornings from 7-10am. Swain, a former University of Tennessee wide receiver, previously hosted mornings on 1180 WVLZ Knoxville until that station went silent and was sold earlier this year. The station has also entered into a content partnership with RockyTopInsider.com. The former Classic Country format that had been heard on WKVL, will remain on 1400 WGAP Maryville and its newly launched 105.9 W290DJ translator.
FCC Actions Four previously dismissed translator applications from the July 2017 filing window have been reinstated. Township Media's AAA "Sun Radio" 1490 KTSN Austin TX (96.1), Southern Broadcast Media's Oldies 980 WTOB Winston-Salem NC (100.7), WJBW LLC's Haitian "Radio Azure" 1000 WJBW Jupiter FL (93.7 West Palm Beach), and American Media Investment's Gospel "1450 The Dove" KQYX Galena KS (92.9 Joplin MO) all had their applications dismissed last September because those licenses were associated with applications done during the 2016 250 mile waiver period. With its Talk format back on FM following multiple changes last year, Blount Broadcasting has taken back control of its 850 WKVL Knoxville and returned the station to Classic Country. WKVL dropped the format when it was leased to John Pirkle’s Oak Ridge FM in May 2013 to assume the Talk programming of 100.3 WNOX after that station was sold to Journal Communications. Later last year Oak Ridge FM regained operations of 94.3 WNFZ and flipped that station to Talk. With Blount regaining operations of WKVL, its previous Classic Country programming has returned as a simulcast with sister 1410 WLOD Loudon.
Update 11/3: As Oak Ridge FM reassumed operations of 94.3 WNFZ on Friday, the station flipped to News/Talk “Knox Talk Radio“. The station is sharing some content with 850 WKVL including the Rude Awakening morning show hosted by Mike Howard and David “Shyne” Thompson. BenMac.com reports the rest of the WNFZ lineup includes Glenn Beck, Dave Ramsey, The Drive with Russell Smith, Herman Cain, Alex Jones, and Coast To Coast AM. WNFZ will also add Sean Hannity when he departs Cumulus’ 98.7 WOKI at the end of the year. Original Report 10/25: When John Pirkle’s Oak Ridge FM reassumes programming control of 94.3 WNFZ Powell/Knoxville on Friday, November 1 at least some Talk content will be in tow. When Pirkle’s group completed the sale of then Talk 100.3 WN...[Read More]
