Cumulus Seeks To Cancel WLUP/WKQX LMA & Purchase; And Chicago PBP Deals

As part of its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings Cumulus Media has asked the United States Bankruptcy Court for permission to walk away from fourteen contracts at its February 1 hearing. The contracts include a handful of tower and building leases, advertising agreemnts, owed money to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and former Westwood One President Bill Battison, and Westwood One agreements to carry programming nationally from CNBC and the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. The three contracts with the biggest impact will be felt in Chicago. At the start of 2014, Cumulus began operating Merlin Media’s Classic Rock “97.9 The Loop” WLUP and Alternative 101.1 WKQX Chicago via LMA. WLS To Drop Bob Sirott and Marianne Murciano; Add Chris Plante

Cumulus Media News/Talk 890 WLS Chicago is revamping its lineup for 2018. Exiting the station are 10am-12pm hosts Bob Sirott and Marianne Murciano. The married couple joined WLS one year ago after previously hosting together at WFLD-TV, 105.9 WCKG, and 720 WGN. Sirott was previously a DJ during the station’s Top 40 heyday from 1973-1980. They will be replaced by Cumulus’ syndicated Chris Plante. Plante, based at 630/105.9 WMAL Washington DC will air live from 9am-11am. Troy Hanson Upped To Cumulus Chicago VP/Operations

Cumulus Media has promoted Troy Hanson from Program Director of Alternative 101.1 WKQX Chicago to Vice President of Operations for its Chicago cluster. Hanson will also retain his role as VP/Programming of Rock formats for the company while adding oversight of Classic Hits 94.7 WLS-FM, Rock “97.9 The Loop” WLUP, and News/Talk 890 WLS. Bob Sirott & Marianne Murciano Join WLS For Late Mornings

Cumulus News/Talk 890 WLS Chicago is adding Bob Sirott & Marianne Murciano to fill the late morning opening created by the cancellation of Jonathon Brandmeier’s syndicated show. Sirott & Murciano have a long history in the Chicago market. Sirott previously worked at WLS from 1973 to 1980 during the station’s CHR heyday before moving to television including a five year run with the CBS network as a Chicago based reporter. In 1994 he was named co-anchor of WFLD-TV’s “Fox Thing In The Morning” where he was first paired with Murciano. By 1999 the couple married. Cumulus Renews Rush Limbaugh For Three Years

Cumulus Media and Premiere Networks have agreed on a three year contract to keep Rush Limbaugh on 33 of the company’s stations. The new deal will keep the show on Cumulus owned stations through the end of 2019 including 890 WLS Chicago, 820 WBAP Dallas, 760 WJR Detroit, 560 KSFO San Francisco, and 630/105.9 WMAL Washington DC. The renewal comes without the animosity of the last extension in 2013 that saw Cumulus threaten to drop Limbaugh as it did to Sean Hannity before agreeing a renewal in all markets except New York. Jonathon Brandmeier To End Syndicated Talker

Jonathon Brandmeier announced today that his Westwood One syndicated talk show will end when his contract expires in early 2017. Brandmeier states that Westwood One has decided not to renew his contract and he “completely agrees with that decision”. The show debuted in March 2015 as a replacement for Dennis Miller. Brandmeier is based at Cumulus News/Talk 890 WLS Chicago, which airs the first two hours of the three hour show live from 9-11am central. ‘Ramblin Ray’ Stevens is exiting CBS Country “US 99.5” WUSN Chicago after 26 years to join Cumulus News/Talk 890 WLS starting Monday, August 8. Stevens will join his former WUSN partner ‘Big John’ Howell on the WLS morning show. The duo were paired together from 2002 through 2006 at the Country station. He has been in the morning slot with various co-hosts since 1994 and with Lisa Dent since Howell’s departure in 2006. WLS Nabs Chicago White Sox & Bulls

The rumors have become reality as Cumulus News/Talk 890 WLS Chicago has nabbed the radio rights to not only the Chicago White Sox, but also the co-owned Chicago Bulls. WLS will begin airing White Sox games in the 2016 season and the Bulls in the 2016-2017 season. Both deals will run through 2021 and include all games and weekly specialty shows. This morning longtime Chicago media reporter Robert Feder wrote that Cumulus Talk 890 WLS was looking to drop Rush Limbaugh’s syndicated show by the end of this month. Longtime Chicago and Phoenix morning personality Jonathan Brandmeier is launching a nationally syndicated 10am-1pm eastern syndicated Talk show with Westwood One. To be based at Chicago’s 890 WLS where it will air live, the show will also air on 790 KABC Los Angeles, 570 KLIF Dallas, 860 KKAT Salt Lake City, 790 WPRV Providence, and 1050 KTBL Albuquerque at launch. A pair of Chicago talkers are headed to new dial positions. Cumulus’ 890 WLS has hired Big John Howell as its new morning host replacing Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft. Howell joins WLS after exiting Salem’s “560 The Answer” WIND at the end of 2014 where he spent eight years. Prior to joining WIND, Howell spent many years at CBS Country “US 99.5” WUSN in both mornings and afternoons. Update 10/8: Cumulus has officially announced the hiring of Steve Dahl for afternoons at 890 WLS Chicago. Dahl will replace Roe Conn and Richard Roeper who have exited the station. Conn told WLS-TV’s “Windy City Live” that they were informed last night that they have already hosted their final show for the station. Cumulus Chicago announces that iconic Chicago personality Steve Dahl will return to 89 WLS-AM as host of a new weekday show, after almost six years away from broadcast radio.
