iHeartMedia Sports 620 WDAE St. Petersburg/95.3 W237CW Pinellas Park FL has dropped its local morning show in favor of ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike. Rick Stroud and Tom Jones were let go from the station following their 6-9am show on Friday morning. The duo have been hosting mornings at the station since May 2012 when they replaced Dan Sileo. WDAE will place Mike & Mike in the timeslot starting Monday, October 10. WDAE will continue to air local programming weekdays from 9am to at least 6pm with Fox Sports Radio’s Jay Mohr and ESPN Radio filling nights and overnights. WDAE is the local flagship for MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays and co-flagship of the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The move gives WDAE an FM signal in parts of the market to match CBS’ “98.7 The Fan” WHFS-FM Holmes Beach. WDAE has held a lead on the new upstart with a 1.8 share to 98.7’s 0.8 in the March PPM monthlies.
Two weeks ago, we reported on Clear Channel’s 970 WFLA Tampa process of adding a translator on 95.3 in Tampa. Additionally, Radio Training Network’s 94.5 W233AV Gulfport, FL has had its originating station changed to WFLA which will give the station FM coverage in St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Additionally, sister station “540 WFLA” WFLF Pine Hills/Orlando will gain a translator. Reach Communications’ 104.5 W283AN Altamonte Springs, which has a CP to increase from 10 to 221 watts, will rebroadcast 540 once the upgrade is complete. 1045WFLA.com was registered on Friday and is already redirecting to WFLF’s website. Clear Channel also uses the WFLA brand on 94.5 WFLF-FM Parker/Panama City and 100.7 WFLA-FM Midway/Tallahassee.
Another Clear Channel AM News/Talk is making the move to FM via translator. Radio Training Network’s 95.3 W237DI West Tampa, FL has applied to move to 105.9 with a power boost from 115 to 250 watts at 456 feet. The application also shifts the originating programming station to Clear Channel’s 970 WFLA. The EMF/Clear Channel duo are working on an additional move-in in Cincinnati. 96.9 W245AJ Forest Park, OH has applied to move to downtown Cincinnati where it will rebroadcast Clear Channel’s WKFS-HD2. We’ve noticed a trend where translators to be programmed by EMF have their applications prepared by EMF’s engineers and translators prepared by Clear Channel end up being programmed by Clear Channel despite who owns the translator.
