Midwest Communications Acquires South Central

Update 6/2: Midwest is paying $72 million for the nine South Central stations. Original Report 5/28: Midwest Communications is expanding to the South Central as it acquires South Central Communication’s 9 stations in three markets for an undisclosed price. As first reported this morning by Tom Taylor Now, the deal comes following the collapse of a long expected purchase of South Central’s stations by Summit Media. The purchase will expand Midwest beyond its existing footprint into Evansville, Knoxville, and Nashville. Knoxville’s X Makes Its Move to 95.7

Update 10/14: “94.3 The X” began simulcasting on 95.7 at 12am this morning. The 94.3 and 95.7 simulcast will continue until the end of the month at which time owner John Pirkle will reassume operation of the station. The WNFZ call letters will remain with 94.3, while 95.7 will change from WQJK to WVRX legally once the FCC reopens. South Central Media has flipped Variety Hits “95.7 JackFM” WQJK Maryville/Knoxville TN to CHR “95.7 Power-FM“. With the positioning of “Maximum Hits”, the station launched its new format at 2:00pm today. The press release hypes the fact that the station will run with “with no annoying DJ chatter”. Randy Chambers, PD of sister Classic Rock 103.5 WIMZ will add programming of 95.7 to his duties. The new format pits the station in direct competition with Journal’s “Star 102.1” WWST.
