Just nine months after its launch as Soft AC “Lite 95.9“, WIOP Charleston has flipped again. The Apex Broadcasting station has now shifted to Hot AC as “Mix 95.9” using the tagline “Today’s Best Music Without The Rap”. The move places the station in-between Clear Channel AC “Y102.5” WXLY, Cumulus CHR “95SX” WSSX, and sister Variety Hits “101.7 Chuck-FM” WAVF. In the Fall 2011 ratings, WIOP registered a 1.7 share. With new sister 103.1 WMXZ Fort Walton Beach, FL dropping its calls yesterday it may make sense to shift them to 95.9.

Over the past few years a number of moves have been made to move stations in and out of the Charleston, SC market. The final piece of that puzzle has been put into place as Apex Broadcasting’s WSPO Isle of Palms has signed on with Classic Hits as “FM 95.9“. The move-in required the following steps to occur: 107.5 WNKT moved into the Columbia market. 101.7 WMGL moved to 107.3. 96.1 WAVF and 101.7 WKZQ Myrtle Beach swapped frequencies.
Charleston, SC is going to see a shakeup of its radio dial that hasn’t been seen anywhere in quite some time. Here’s a quick rundown of the changes: Citadel’s “Cat Country” 107.5 WNKT moves into the Columbia market. Citadel’s Urban AC 101.7 WMGL (currently in a trust until WNKT moves) moves to 107.3 with a stronger city grade signal. Apex’s Variety Hits “Chuck-FM” 96.1 WAVF moves to 101.7 (via a swap of licences with Next Media’s 101.7 WKZQ Myrtle Beach moving to 96.1) by taking each others intellectual property.
