Forever Media Sports/Active Rock “Rocky 96.5” WRQY Moundsville/Wheeling WV has flipped to Classic Rock. The move comes with the station dropping ESPN Radio’s Golic & Wingo morning show and replacing it with Free Beer & Hot Wings. WRQY continues to serve as the Wheeling affiliate for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. WRQY registered a 3.4 share in the Fall 2017 Nielsen Audio ratings. The move to mostly music places the station closer to iHeartMedia Rock “Eagle 107.5” WEGW which held a 10.1 share in the fall.
Is it Sports? Is it Rock? If it’s Keymarket Communications’ 96.5 WYJK-FM Moundsville/Wheeling, WV it’s both. WYJK-FM dropped its prior Variety Hits “96.5 Jack-FM” identity on Monday for a Sports/Active Rock hybrid branded as “Rocky 96.5” WRQY. The new format features ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike In The Morning followed by Westwood One’s Rock 2.0 programming. WRQY’s previous format had plunged from a 5.6 share in the Spring 2013 Nielsen Audio ratings to a 1.3 in 2014. The new format positions the station against Clear Channel’s duo of Rock “Eagle 107.5” WEGW and “Fox Sports 1400” WBBD.
After just nine months on the air, Keymarket Country “Biggie 96.5” WBGI-FM Wheeling is getting upgraded. On September 10, “Biggie” will relocate from 96.5 to 100.5, while Variety Hits “100.5 Jack-FM” WYJK-FM will take the 96.5 slot. The move gives the Country format a boost to the Class B signal licensed to Bellaire OH that operates with 48kW at 152 meters. Jack will slide to the Class A signal licensed to Moundsville WV operating with 2.5kW at 138 meters. “Biggie 96.5” debuted on December 27, 2011 on a brand new signal to the market.
