After stunting as “X-A Radio” with X Ambassadors music all weekend, Saga Communications launched Alternative “Alt 95.9” W240CB/WQNY-HD3 Ithaca NY at 5pm today. Brand Manager Mike Kerr states that the station will also try to associate the station with cuisine stating, “Our Alt 95.9 will be very popular with millennials. Two of their favorite activities are listening to music…followed closely by enjoying cooking and food. Our plan is to do some very creative associations of “food” with “audio”. Saga Liberal Talk 1470 WNYY Ithaca NY will drop the format for Oldies on February 1. In an interview with the Ithaca Times, General Manager Chet Osadchey stated that the move is due to lack of programming to fill out a schedule as only Alan Colmes, Thom Hartmann, and Stephanie Miller remain as many others have left syndication. Osadchey made sure to emphasize that it wasn’t politically motivated decision. No word yet if Saga’s additional Liberal Talkers in Bellingham WA, Brattleboro VT, and Springfield MA will make similar moves away from the format. With the AM Revitalization Translator Waiver Period set to expire at the end of this month, there has been a slight uptick in applications trying to get in before the deadline. In one such case, Saga Communications is cleverly extending the 250 mile limit to improve their status in two markets.
