Station Sales Week Of 6/23: Sinclair Purchases KOMO-FM

Sinclair Broadcasting is exercising its option to purchase 97.7 KOMO-FM Oakville and 97.7 K249DX Redmond WA from South Sound Broadcasting for $6.75 million. Sinclair and predecessor Fisher Broadcasting have operated KOMO-FM since May 2009 via LMA as a simulcast of News 1000 KOMO Seattle. Hunt Broadcasting sells AAA “105.9 The Wave” KYSJ Coos Bay OR back to former owner Lighthouse Radio Group for $5,000 and the cancellation of all debts and financial obligations owed by Hunt to Lighthouse for the original purchase and studio and tower rental. Sinclair Broadcasting Acquires Fisher Communications

Sinclair Broadcast Group has agreed to purchase Fisher Communications for $373 Million. The sale includes 20 television stations across eight northwestern markets including Seattle and Portland, as well as four Seattle radio stations. Sinclair will acquire News simulcast 1000 KOMO/97.7 KOMO-FM, Talk 570 KVI, and Hot AC “Star 101.5” KPLZ as part of the transaction. The deal will return Sinclair to radio ownership for the first time since 2000 when it completed the divestiture of its then 52 radio stations in a pair of sales that netted the company over a billion dollars. 46 stations serving nine markets were sold to Entercom in 1999 for $824.5 Million, while the St. Louis cluster was sold in February 2000 to Emmis for $220 Million. KVI Seattle Returns To Conservative Talk; KOMO Expands News

Its been a tumultuous two years at Fisher Communication’s 570 KVI Seattle. In November 2010 the station dropped its long running Conservative Talk format amidst declining ratings to flip to Oldies. After the music format failed to generate an audience on AM, the station went back to Talk with a lifestyle and consumer based lineup. On Tuesday, September 4, with ratings hovering around a 0.2, KVI will complete the cycle as it will return to Conservative Talk. The new KVI will be anchored by John Carlson’s return to the station to host mornings from 5-9am. Carlson had been hosting afternoons on KVI prior to the switch to Oldies; at which time he moved to sister News 1000/97.7 KOMO for a 9am-12pm show.
