Cumulus flipped CHR “Q100/20” 97.9 W250BC Atlanta/99.7 WWWQ-HD3 to Classic Hip-Hop “OG 97.9” at 12pm today. The station joins Core Communicator’s “Old School 99.3” in the Classic Hip-Hop arena in Atlanta. Unlike 99.3, the 97.9 signal does cover all of Atlanta proper. The previous “Q100/20” format was a new music centric flanker to CHR “Q100” 99.7 WWWQ. It registered a 0.6 share in the November Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings monthly released yesterday. The first hour of OG 97.9 consisted of: Snoop Dogg – Gin & Juice DMX – Party Up Fugees – Ready Or Not Ice Cube – Check Yo Self Lil Jon & Yin Yang Twins & East Side Boyz – Get Low Dr. Dre – Nothin But A G Thing Jay Z – Big Pimp...[Read More]
The craziness that has been the Atlanta market this past week continues as Cumulus flips 80s/90s Hits “Journey 97.9” W250BC to Top 20 “Q100 20“. The new format, modeled after SiriusXM’s “20 on 20” is focusing on all CHR currents. If we can deduce Cumulus’ strategy here, it is to protect Q100’s brand against Clear Channel’s new “Power 96.1“. Power and Wild are more younger skewing than Q100. By making 97.9 younger skewing they have something that will in theory protect Q. If people have Q100 as a top preset and 97.9 is marketed as being part of Q100, they could get people who jump around during songs they don’t like or commericals to sample 97.9 instead of any of the other CHR options in the market.
The top story this week was Atlanta’s 97.9 W250BC debuting its new format as “Journey 97.9“. Clear Channel has signed on 105.1 W286BK Birmingham, AL. The 99 watt translator is owned by Way FM Media, but simulcasting 105.5 WERC-HD2. While currently airing Smooth Jazz, we expect the station to soon flip to Gospel as “Hallelujah 105.1“. Hallelujah1051.com was registered by Clear Channel on June 16. That would put the station in direct competition with Cox Media Group’s “Heaven 610” WAGG. KGVY Inc., owners of 1080 KGVY Green Valley/Tucson, AZ and Edgewater Broadcasting are swapping translators. Edgewater gets 102.3 K272DC Oro Valley, AZ in exchange for the Construction Permit to 100.7 K264BB Green Valley. Lakes Media’s 103.7 W279AO Danville...[Read More]
Update 6/17: And Journey it is after all. W250BC has debuted its new format as Gold based Hot AC “Journey 97.9” branded as “Totally 80’s and 90’s”. The new format will flank sister CHR “Q100” 99.7 WWWQ against Lincoln Financial Media’s Adult CHR “Star 94” WSTR and Cox’ AC “B98.5” WSB-FM targeting the older end of the female demographic. Much like Cincinnati, we wouldn’t be shocked to see Cumulus pipe in Rick Dees for middays or afternoons. Rodney Ho of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has more of the launch details. Listen to the launch of Journey 97.9 at FormatChange.com. The very 80’s centric first hour of Journey 97.9 consisted of: Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’ Madonna R...[Read More]
