Lotus Communications has begun its LMA of 980 KFWB Los Angeles and has flipped the station from South Asian “Desi 980” to Spanish Ranchera “980 La Mera Mera“. Lotus announced its acquisition of KFWB from Universal Media Access for $11.2 million in early October. Universal Media Access had just acquired the station from CBS’ KFWB License Trust in January for $8 million and debuted the South Asian format in March. The new format fills the gap created by 930 KHJ’s flip from Ranchera to Catholic in 2014. That format continues on “La Ranchera 96.7” KWIZ-FM Santa Ana, but that signal only covers Orange County and not the bulk of the Los Angeles market.
Just months after acquiring 980 KFWB Los Angeles and launching South Asian “Desi 980“, Universal Media Access is selling the station to Lotus Communications for $11.2 million. Universal Media Access paid $8 million to purchase then Sports “980 The Beast” from CBS’ KFWB License Trust in January. The deal gives Lotus its second AM in Los Angeles as the company owns Spanish Sports “ESPN Deportes 1330” KWKW. This is to announce that a contract has been signed and an application is going to be filed with the FCC for the transfer of radio station KFWB-AM, Los Angeles, California, from Universal Media Access KFWB-AM, LLC to Lotus Communications Corporation for $11.2 million. The Seller, Universal Media Access KFWB-AM, LLC, is Delaware Limited Liability Co...[Read More]
Monday, February 29 will be the final day of broadcasting for Sports “980 The Beast” KFWB Los Angeles. Universal Media Access will take control of the station on March 1 and launch South Asian “Desi 980“. KFWB began its current Sports format in August 2014. The KFWB License Trust sold it to Universal Media Access in January for $8 million after CBS Radio was forced to divest it. Neither the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers or MLS’ Los Angeles Galaxy have announced new flagship stations yet. The Clippers will remain on 980 through the remainder of the current season if they do not sign to move to a new flagship station.
The sale price for KFWB to Universal Media Access was $8 million and not $15 million as originally reported. When the sale to UMA closes expect a South Asian targeted format on KFWB. Desi980AM.com was registered by an employee of Mercury Capital Partners and would join similarly branded stations run by the company in San Jose and Seattle. Since the CBS Sports Radio Network was announced in June, one major market has been missing from the list of planned affiliates. With no CBS or Cumulus owned stations already in the format, Los Angeles was the only top 10 market without an affiliate for the network. Now it appears that News/Talk 980 KFWB may be the one to take that role for the network. The following domains were registered earlier this month: 980Sports.com, 980TheFan.com, AllSports980.com, AM980TheFan.com, LASports980.com, Sports980LA.com, and TheFan980.com. Additionally the station has placed a job opening for a Sports Sales Sponsorship Account Executive for the station and its Los Angeles Clippers play-by-play. KFWB is owned by CBS, but is operated independent of the company by a trust managed by Shootingstar, Inc due t...[Read More]
