As the FCC prepares to clear out the frozen 2003 Translator applications and open up the LPFM filing window later this year, many existing translators are hurrying to get their upgrades into the system. The past two weeks have been filled with dozens of upgrades applications. Starting in New York where 106.3 W292DV is trying once again to get relocated into the city. After discarding its hopes to operate in the city last year following interference claims the translator was unable to build out its CP on the Queens/Nassau county border. The translator has now applied for an STA to return to Long Island City, Queens with 4 watts to keep the license alive. EMF Broadcasting is seeking to move 100.7 K264AF Guasti, CA into parts of Los Angeles. The translator will operate with 235 watts from the...[Read More]
WLFM, LLC has begun the process to convert WKQX-LP to digital. The low-powered television station is known to radio listeners as Merlin Media’s Alternative “Q87.7“. With the September 2015 deadline for all remaining analog LPTV’s to convert to digital, the flashcut will need to happen by then. The digital transition will end the ability of the LPTV on Channel 6 to masquerade as a radio station. That will not mean the end of Q87.7 any time soon. Once the FCC approves the application the station will have three years to build out the new digital facilities. That will take it well past the September 2015 drop dead date for analog LPTV, keeping WKQX’s programming safe until at least then. Southwest FM Broadcasters Beautiful Music 102.1 KAHM Prescott, AZ has been g...[Read More]

One of the markets that has yet to see translator action this year has been Chicago. Calvary Radio Network is looking to change that. 100.7 W264BF Englewood, IL currently operates with 2 watts from the top of the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. It has been granted a CP to upgrade to 10 watts which will give it coverage of much of the city of Chicago. The translator is currently licensed to simulcast Calvary’s 89.9 WHLP Valparaiso, IN. The maneuverings of Radio Power, Inc with its translators in Detroit will end up as one of the top stories of the year. Last month we reported that Radio Power had purchased 97.5 W248AQ Harrison, MI from Radio Assist Ministry for $32,000.
