Less than four months after flipping to AC “Classy 105.1” in February, Radio Billings has rebranded 105.1 KYSX Billings MT as “105.1 Star-FM“. The station’s logo is identical to the recently launched “95.3 Star-FM” in nearby Missoula. KYSX flipped from Christian AC to AC in February.
Federated Media is making adjustments to Country “K105” 105.1 WQHK-FM Huntertown/Fort Wayne IN as half of its airstaff departs and its General Sales Manager demoted. As first reported by Indiana Radio Watch, morning co-host Dude Walker and afternoon host Aricka McCauley have exited WQHK-FM. Walker joined the station as night host in 1994 and moved to mornings in 1998. McCauley has hosted afternoons since 2014 after joining WQHK from CHR “U93” WNDV-FM South Bend. Morning co-hosts Dan Austin and Kylie Havens remain in place. Radio Billings flipped Christian AC “Crossroads 105.1” to AC “Classy 105.1” KYSX Billings MT in January. The move brings an Adult Contemporary station back to the Billings market for the first time since “Magic 107.5” KRPM flipped to Classic Country in 2014.
Alpha Media Country “98.7 The Bull” KUPL Portland has announced the addition of Jenn Hays to the station’s morning show alongside Tony Russell and Jake Byron. Hays joins KUPL from Townsquare Media’s Billings cluster where she served as Music Director at “Cat Country 102.9” KCTR-FM and afternoon host at CHR “97.1 Kiss-FM” KKBR under the name Jenn Parker. The Oregon native previously worked in promotions at Entercom Country “99.5 The Wolf” KWJJ Portland and at CBS Radio’s 94.1 KMPS Seattle. Following an informal objection and request for enforcement by Connoisseur Media, Edgewater Broadcasting has withdrawn its Construction Permit and License to Cover applications for 96.3 K242CI Casper WY to relocate to 102.5 in Billings MT. Edgewater had applied for and was granted a CP to move K242CI to Billings rebroadcasting Sun Mountain Inc.'s 1340 KBSR Laurel MT where it was operating as AC "Magic 102.5". Connoisseur claims that K242CI and 104.5 K283CP (licensed to rebroadcast 1450 KYLW Lockwood MT) have been operating illegally. Thirteen translators in Indiana and Michigan have gone silent after ending their deal to rebroadcast Progressive Broadcasting System's Christian AC 104.7 WFRN-FM Elkhart. Indiana Radio Watch reports that Friends of Christian Radio took 94.3 W232CK Gary, 95.1 W236BD Michigan City, 96.3 W242BM Kokomo, 97.5 W248AP Chesterton, 102.3 W272BZ Portage, 102.3 W272CZ Sheridan, 105.3 W287BE Greenwood, 106.7 W294BA Valparaiso, 107.7 W299AJ Marion IN and 96.3 W242BH Marshall, 100.3 W262AF Parchment, 101.1 W266AE Coldwater, and 102.5 W273BM Benton Harbor MI all filed silent STAs while seeking a new source to rebroadcast.
Eversole Media Group has expanded its network of “Wild” Rhythmic CHR’s to a third market in Montana. “Wild 104.5” is airing on Sun Mountain, Inc.’s 1450 KYLW Lockwood and Edgewater Broadcasting’s 104.5 K283CP Billings. KYLW joins Eversole’s “Wild 104.1” K281CH/KMSO-HD4 Missoula and “Wild 97.9” 1340 KYWL Evergreen/97.9 K258BW Shelby/Kalispell. Those two stations rebranded from “Heat” in August. While being the first Rhythmic CHR in the market, “Wild 104.5” competes against a trio of Mainstream CHR’s: Townsquare Media’s “97.1 Kiss-FM” KKBR, Benedetti Media Group’s “Hot 101.9” KRSQ, and Connoisseur Media’s “Planet 106.7” KPLN.
A couple weeks ago we rounded up a number of format changes that took place under the radar. Since that report we’ve been tipped off to a number of additional changes. Shortly after Point Broadcasting closed on its acquisition of Rock 99.1 KXFM Santa Maria CA on August 31, the station dropped its format and is currently running a jockless/commercial-free version of the Rhythmic Oldies “Old School” format it operates on 104.7 KOCP Oxnard and 104.7 KQIE Redlands/Riverside and a few other stations in Southern California. Wilks Broadcasting Sells Their Three Fresno Stations To One Putt Broadcasting Hubbard Acquires 16 Minnesota Stations From Omni Broadcasting Chaparral Broadcasting sells Classic Hits “Mojo 92.5” KBXI Park City/Billings, MT to Kurtis Anthony Breuning’s Anthony Media for $650,000. Anthony has been operating the station via a Time Brokerage Agreement since February 2010. If within five years of the closing of the sale Anthony sells the station, Chaparral will receive 20% of the proceeds exceeding the original $650,000 purchase price. Should Anthony enter into an LMA, JSA, TBA, or similar agreement with a third party, Chaparral will receive $70,000. Anthony Media’s Classic Country “Twang 105” KYSX Billings has begun simulcasting on 107.5 KRPM Billings. The move displaces AC “Magic 107.5” from KRPM which along with Benedetti Media Group’s Country “98.5 The Wolf” KEWF and CHR “Hot 101.9” KRSQ had been operated by Terry Strickland with an option to buy. 105.1 KYSX and Chaparral Broadcasting owned Variety Hits “Mojo 92.5” KBXI Park City are operated by Anthony Media. It appears a Rock format will be heading to 105.1 as KRock105.com was registered by Anthony Media’s engineer Bruce Faulkner last month.
Update 7/3: At 10:00am, KKBR Billings launched its new CHR format as “Pop Crush 97.1“. The station will feature the syndicated Elvis Duran in the morning and Billy Bush in evenings along with locally staffed middays and afternoons. Tara Nicole will host middays with the afternoon slot yet to be filled. Update 7/2: Instead of Kiss, it appears the new format will be branded as “Pop Crush 97.1” as Townsquare has registered PopCrush971.com and PopCrushBillings.com. Classic Rock “105.1 The X” KYSX Billings has switched to Country “Twang 105.1“. The move comes as Kurt Anthony, who operates Variety Hits “Mojo 92.5” KBXI via LMA from Chaparral Broadcasting takes on a similar arrangement with Benedetti Media Group for 105.1. Anthony has options to buy both stations as well. The Billings Gazette reports that “105.1 The Twang” has an 1800 song playlist, that all include “twang guitar”. The remaining three stations of Benedetti Media Group have been leased with options to buy to cluster GM Terry Strickland. Those stations are Country “98.5 The Wolf” KEWF, CHR “Hot 101.9” KRSQ, and AC “Magic 107.5” KRPM.
