Wild Country Comes To Calgary

Jim Pattison Radio Group flipped AAA “95.3 The Peak” CHPK Calgary to Country “Wild 95.3” at 10:15 this morning. The flip puts CHPK in direct competition with Corus’ “Country” CKRY with a younger skewing format. CHPK signed-on in April 2014 but never rose above a 1.7 share and a 1.5 in the most recent August 31-November 29 2015 Numeris PPM ratings period. Up 97.7 Goes Down In Calgary

Rawlco Radio’s “Up 97.7” CHUP-FM Calgary has completed its evolution from Adult Hits to Mainstream AC as it rebranded on Friday as “Soft Rock 97.7“. CHUP placed twelfth out of eighteen stations in the March-May Numeris PPM ratings with a 4.1 share, but was fourth in the market in CUME. The Calgary market has been without a straight-ahead AC station since Rogers Media’s “Lite 95.9” CHFM shifted to Adult CHR “Kiss 95.9” in December 2013.

Amp Radio Calgary Drops Quickhitz

Just three weeks after flipping to the “Quickhitz” format featuring truncated versions of songs, Newcap is ending the experiment at “90.3 Amp Radio” CKMP Calgary. Newcap Vice President/Programming Steve Jones told the Canadian Press, It was greeted with a lot of curiosity and it was also greeted with numerous legal threats from a variety of different directions. Amp Radio Calgary Relaunches With Quickhitz

Update 8/1: CKMP completed its “update” at 9am today as it rebranded to “90.3 Amp” promoting “Twice The Music”. CKMP is utilizing Sparknet’s “Quickhitz” format of abbreviated songs to play more music per hour. Amp is promoting that it will play 24 songs per-hour as opposed to the 12 it played before the switch. Update 4/25: “95.3 The Peak” made its debut with a current based AAA presentation this morning. Kath Thompson, previously PD of AC 98.1 CHFI Toronto is serving as Program/Music Director. The station’s airstaff includes Blake Ransom, most recently at CHR “Kraze 101.3” Red Deer and Ashley Hinton in mornings. The duo will be joined by current “Virgin Radio 98.5” CIBK night host Danny Kid once he fulfills his contractual obligations to that station. CRTC Approves Bell/Astral Merger

The CRTC has approved the second attempt by Bell Canada to acquire Astral Media. “Astral’s application put forward a different approach and responded to many of our concerns” said Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC. “Yet there remained a significant risk that BCE could exert its market power to limit choice and competition. To ensure the public interest is served, we are requiring BCE to invest in new Canadian programming and sell more than a dozen services, and we are putting in place a number of competitive safeguards. Pattison Acquires Winnipeg and Calgary Stations

Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has announced the acquisition of three stations from the proposed Astral/Bell merger. From Bell the group has acquired Rhythmic AC “Kool 101.5” CKBE Calgary and Classic Hits “Fab 94.3” CHIQ Winnipeg. Coming from Astral is Country “QX 104” 104.1 CFQX. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The sale is contingent on CRTC approval of this and the Astral/Bell merger. Bell/Astral Merger Take 2; Two Ottawa Stations Sold

After rejecting the planned merger of Bell Media and Astral in October, the two companies plans have have been approved by the Competition Bureau. In order to do so, a few swaps will be made with Corus Entertainment and Shaw Media mainly involving ownership stakes in cable television networks but one that has ramifications on the radio industry as Corus will acquire two radio stations in Ottawa: Classic Hits “Boom 99.7” CJOT and Rock “106.9 The Bear” CKQB. Additionally Bell/Astral have agreed to auction off eight additional radio stations.
