Three weeks after Urban “Swagga Radio” 970 WWRK Florence/97.9 W250BJ Florence/105.9 W290CD Darlington/94.1 WRZE Kingstree SC moved its programming to WDAR-FM Darlington as “105.5 The Beat“, iHeartMedia has launched a new format on those stations. The trio of FM signals have flipped to Classic Rock as “Rock 94.1 – 97.9 – 105.9“. Positioned as “The Pee Dee’s Classic Rock”, the new format positions the stations up against Cumulus Media Rock “102.1 The Fox” WMXT and Community Broadcasters “94.7 Rock” WWBD. The station has picked up the syndicated Rover’s Morning Glory based at sister 100.7 WMMS Cleveland for mornings.
iHeartMedia has flipped Christian AC “Sunny 105.5” WDAR-FM Darlington/Florence SC to Urban “105.5 The Beat“. The station assumes the Urban format from sister “Swagga Radio” 970 WWRK Florence/97.9 W250BJ Florence/105.9 W290CD Darlington/94.1 WRZE Kingstree who are currently simulcasting with WDAR-FM to redirect listeners to the new frequency. The syndicated Breakfast Club will remain in mornings. The “Sunny” format goes out with a 2.1 share in the Spring 2017 Nielsen Audio ratings continuing a downward trend from 4.1 in Fall 2015 to 3.8 to 2.5 in Fall 2016. Swagga rose from 1.5 in Fall 2016 to 2.6 in Spring 2017, which still was well behind Cumulus Media’s market leading Urban 106.3 WYNN-FM‘s 11.1 share.
Jim Leven and Bruce Mittman’s Community Broadcasters are continuing to expand in South Carolina. After purchasing Miller Communications’ 12 stations, 10 translators, and 3 LPTV CP’s in September for $2.5 million, Community Broadcasters four stations from Glory Communications for $850,000. The stations are Gospel 94.5 WSPX Bowman/Orangeburg, 98.3 WLJI Summerton/Sumter, 105.1 WPDT Coward/Florence and Brokered Talk “The Point” 1490 WTQS Cameron. For the three FM’s, Community is entering into a Programming Agreement with the seller to continue to carry the programming of their 95.3 WFMV South Congaree/Columbia which will air from 12pm through 5am weekdays on all three stations as well as around syndicated programming on Saturdays.
Update 5/27: The sale has been filed with the FCC showing that Connoisseur Media will pay $50 million for 1370 WALK/97.5 WALK-FM Patchouge. Additionally, one of the Qantum stations will be sent to the Brunswick Divestiture Trust. Urban “B92.7” WBGA St. Simons Island, GA will be spun-off to keep the cluster under the ownership limits as it loses its grandfathered status. After stunting for a few hours with songs featuring the word magic in the title, Cumulus Active Rock “94.3 The Dam” WCMG Latta/Florence, SC has returned to its previous Urban AC “Magic 94.3” identity. The move brings back the identity the station held until August 2010 when it shifted to its now former Active Rock brand. Branded as “The Pee Dee’s Classic Soul And R&B”, the station is taking direct aim at Qantum Communication’s “102.9 The Flo” WZTF. In the Fall 2013 Nielsen ratings for the market, WCMG had a mere 0.5 share with its Rock format, while WZTF was fourth in the market with an 8.8 share. Qantum Communications has shuffled its AM signals in Florence, SC. The Talk format that had been heard on 970 moves along with the WJMX call letters to 1400 in Darlington as “NewsTalk 1400“. The WWRK call letters move along with the Urban “Swagga” format used to feed two translators shifts to 970. “Swagga” is also heard on 94.1 WRZE Kingstree along with 97.9 W250BJ Florence and 105.9 W290CD Darlington. 970 WWRK operates with 10kW day and 3kW nights, while 1400 WJMX runs 1kW around the clock.

Qantum Communications has flipped a pair of stations in the Florence SC market to Urban as “Swagga 94.1/105.9“. The new “Swagga” is made up of 94.1 WRZE Kingstree, which had been simulcasting AC “Sunny 105.5” WDAR and the former Gospel AM/translator combo of 1400 WWRK/105.9 W290CD Darlington. Denis Davis, the PD/afternoon host of sister CHR “103X” WJMX-FM adds programming duties for Swagga.
On Monday Qantum Broadcasting’s News/Talk 970 WJMX Florence SC dropped Rush Limbaugh in favor of Cumulus’ Mike Huckabee. Three days later, Rush returns to the market as Miller Communications as Variety Hits “95.3 Frank-FM” WFRK shifts to Talk as “Live 95“. Frank’s format moves intact to 97.1 W246AW which had been Country “Cat Country 97.1” until earlier this month when it began simulcasting 95.3. Miller CEO Harold Miller tells SCNow.com that the format change and move of Limbaugh to 95.3 was planned to take place on August 1, but was moved up due to WJMX dropping Limbaugh early.
