Saga Communications continues its roll-out of its “Pure Oldies” brand as it has launched the format on 101.3 W267BA/WQPO-HD2 Harrisonburg VA this morning. “Pure Oldies 101.3” becomes Saga’s seventh station utilizing that format and brand joining stations in Asheville, Champaign, Des Moines, Hilton Head, Ithaca, and Springfield IL and domain registrations pointing to more coming. The simulcast of Sports “ESPN Harrisonburg” 1360 WHBG moves to new sign-on 106.9 W295CP Harrisonburg. This is the second new translator format launch for Saga Harrisonburg in recent weeks as the company launched Soft AC “EZ 100.1” W261CV/WQPO-HD3 earlier this month.
Along with this week’s launch of Soft AC “The Bay” in Portland ME, Saga Communications has also debuted the format in Harrisonburg VA. Classic Rock “V100.1” W261CV/WQPO-HD3 Harrisonburg flipped to Soft AC as “EZ 100.1“. The new format creates a flanker between sister Hot AC “More 96.1” WMQR and Classic Hits “Rewind 105.1” WWRE against iHeartMedia AC “Mix 93.1” WSVO.
Two Virginia AM stations launched FM translator signals this week. Saga Communications Sports “ESPN 1450” WVAX Charlottesville is now heard on 103.1 W276DA with its 100w/322m signal. iHeartMedia’s News/Talk 1300 WKCY Harrisonburg has completed its move of 99.3 W257DR Vineland NJ to 107.9 in Harrisonburg with 240w horizontal/472m. WKCY will continue to simulcast on 970 WKCI Waynesboro VA.

Saga Communications has completed its purchase of Gamma Broadcasting’s two stations in Harrisonburg, VA and the swap of one to Liberty University leading to multiple programming changes. Classic Country “Real Country 96.9” WSIG Mount Jackson has rebranded as “Country Legends 96.9” as Saga takes control of the station. AC 95.5 WBOP Buffalo Gap is now under the control of Liberty University and operating as a satellite of Christian AC “88.3 The Journey” WRVL Lynchburg. 101.3 W267BA Harrisonburg shifts from rebroadcasting WRVL to Saga Sports “ESPN 1360” WHBG Harrisonburg. Saga had closed on its purchase of Verstandig Broadcasting’s Harrisonburg stations at the beginning of August.
The “hacking” of the former “105.1 Bob Rocks” WTGD Bridgewater/Harrisonburg, VA came to an end at 7:00am as Saga Communications launched Classic Hits “Rewind 105.1” WWRE. Concurrently sister AC “Fresh 96.1” WJDV Broadway rebranded as “More 96.1” WMQR to bring it inline with the brand utilized by the company’s recently rebranded AC stations elsewhere in the country. Translator Moves Educational Media Foundation’s 96.5 K243BN Laveen, AZ applies to open up its directional pattern to increase coverage to the east and west while remaining at its current 250 watts at 278.6 meters antenna on Phoenix’s North Mountain. K243BN will likely be heading towards a signal conflict with 1TV.com’s 97.3 KIKO-FM Claypool, which applied last month to upgrade to a Class C on 96.5. K243BN will change its originating station to an HD subchannel of iHeartMedia’s 99.9 KESZ Phoenix (Coverage Map).

With the application to the FCC for the transfer of AC 95.5 WBOP Buffalo Gap and Classic Country “Real Country 96.9” WSIG Mount Jackson, VA to Saga, we now know how the deal will play out. Saga will pay $1.335 million for the two stations, with $885,000 attributed to WSIG and $450,000 to WBOP.
