WVBG Brings Praise To Hilton Head

Mount Carmel Baptist Church has flipped its recently acquired Classic Hits “94.5 The Beach” 1490 WVGB/94.5 W233AW Beaufort, SC to Gospel “Praise 94.5“. Mount Carmel Baptist Church had acquired WVGB and W233AW from Partners Broadcast Group in May for $300,000. Michelle Coke, a veteran of Urban AC’s “V101.9” WBAV Charlotte, NC and “Star 94.5” WCFB Orlando is Program Director.

Station Sales Week Of 5/15

Terry Barber Enterprises is continuing to grow a cluster in Montgomery, AL. Barber, the former GM of Blueberry Broadcasting’s cluster in the market, purchased Gospel 800 WMGY in March and is now adding another AM and translator. Barber is paying $210,000 for Classic Hits 1250 WRBZ Wetumpka from J&W LLC. and $100,000 for 96.5 W243CS Montgomery from Patrick Sullivan. TBE began operating both stations and Sullivan’s 95.5 W238CE Montgomery via LMA on May 1. Translator Moves Entercom has agreed to purchase the Construction Permit for 105.7 W289CB Milwaukee from Kevin Youngers for $300,000. As part of the sale, Entercom has applied to relocate the translator to the tower of 103.7 WXSS where it will operate with 240 watts at 284 meters rebroadcasting 103.7 WXSS-HD3 (Coverage Map). Apple 107.1 Inc. has made yet another modification to its application for 106.3 W292DV New York as it changes the originating station to Multicultural Broadcasting’s 1660 WWRU Jersey City. The translator will operate with 40 watts at 200 meters (Coverage Map). North Texas Public Broadcasting is relocating it two FM’s to a new location on Dallas’ Cedar Hill. 90.1 KERA-FM will go from operating with 100kW at 388 meters to 29.7kW at 571.7 meters, while 91.7 KKXT will shift from a Class C with 100kW at 335 meters to a Class C0 with 19.29kW at 571.7 meters. Saga Broadcasting has purchased a pair translator Construction Permits from Edgewater Broadcasting for a combined $65,000. 99.1 W256CI Clarksville, TN will operate with 250 watts rebroadcasting 107.9 WCVQ Fort Campbell, KY and 98.5 K253BQ Jonesboro, AR will operate with 250 watts rebroadcasting 106.3 KJBX Cash. Apex Broadcasting Acquires WGZO

Required to be spun-off due to L&L Broadcasting’s pending purchase of 100.1 WSSJ, Apex Broadcasting has agreed to purchase Classic Hits “103.1 The Drive” WGZO Parris Island, SC for $450,000. Apex does not currently own any stations in the Savannah/Hilton Head market, but has a cluster of 1 AM and 4 FM’s in nearby Charleston.

Larry Wilson Acquires Triad Broadcasting

Larry Wilson, the former founder and CRO of Citadel Broadcasting who operates Alpha Broadcasting in Portland, has acquired Triad Broadcasting for $21 Million. Triad operates with different operational names in the markets it serves, such as Go Radio Fargo, JMP Radio in Peoria, and Adventure Radio in Bluefield and Savannah/Hilton Head The company will be operated under the name L&L Radio, standing for “Live & Local”. The 32 stations involved in the deal serve five markets: Biloxi MS – Sports “96.7 The Champ” WUJM, Rock 97.9 WCPR, Variety Hits “105.9 Bob-FM” WQBB, CHR “107.1 The Monkey” WXYK, and Sports simulcast “The Team” 1490 WXBD/1640 WTNI. The Coast Reaches Hilton Head

Partners Broadcast Group has flipped CHR “94.5 The Party” 1490 WVGB/94.5 W233AW Beaufort/Hilton Head, SC to Classic Hits as “The Coast“. Partners acquired the station and translator earlier this year from Vivian Broadcasting for $300,000. The station’s Facebook page describes the new format as “Beach, Soul and Rock-n-Roll”. The move places the station in direct competition with Low Country Radio’s “104.9 The Surf” WLHH. And that’s where this deal gets interesting. The three partners in Partners Broadcasting were also the three owners of WLHH until last week when Joel Garrett applied to acquire the 66 percent he did not own of 1490 and 94.5 from Joe Mule and C.J. Jones for $10.

Translator Report 8/28

The Clear Channel/EMF bulk translator move to the IDS Center in Minneapolis has hit a few hitches. The planned moves of 93.3 W227BF Shoreview, 97.7 K249ED Albertville, 99.9 K260BA Coon Rapids, and 102.5 K273BH Fridley have been hit with informal objections to move by a Jeff Sibert. The move of 97.7 is also being objected by United Audio Corp., the owner of 97.5 KNXR Rochester, MN. Northpine.com has more details on the move, including a part of history repeating itself. These petitions impacted Clear Channel’s frequency swap of 1130 KFAN and 100.3 KTLK earlier this month. A similar Clear Channel/EMF move in Baton Rouge is being protested as well. With the July 4 holiday, its been a quiet start to the month on the translator front. Here’s the rundown of the big moves since our last report. Maverick Media has acquired W262BR Beloit, WI from Edgewater Broadcasting for $45,000 and has begun the process of moving the station to Rockford, IL. The moves will bump the translator from 4 watts on 100.3 to 230 watts on 100.5 where it will move to the same tower as new sister Active Rock “104.9 The X” WXRX. The top translator story this week is the return of the Urban format to Pittsburgh via 660 WPYT and 100.1 W261AX as we’ve been discussing for the past few weeks. About 60 miles east of Kansas City we see the debut of a new CHR. 1430 KAOL Carrollton, MO has dropped its Sports format and with the addition of 101.3 K267BN Bosworth, MO it has relaunched as “101.3 The Grenade“. Update 3/18: 107.9 WLOW has relaunched as Hot AC “Y107.9” playing the “Hits of the 90’s, 2K, and Today”.
