There are two things to know about Fonz FM, the AM/FM-translator combo that recently rebranded from the True Oldies Channel. The name is brilliant, prompting the sort of excited reader reaction that I last experienced during the November volley of CBS/Entercom format change. Like Tuscaloosa, Ala.’s Nick 97.5, it was the rare format change that generated TV coverage. I wish I’d come up with the name myself, but I’ve never had to launch an oldies station in the city where “Happy Days” took place. Then, despite the name, the music is largely ‘70s with some ‘60s, which is where True Oldies Channel had evolved to as well. Fonz FM isn’t specializing in the pre-Beatles music that would have been playing at the Arnold’s Drive-In of the TV show. I’ve heard “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” but even tha...[Read More]
Playing tribute to hometown hero Arthur Fonzarelli, Milwaukee Radio Alliance has relaunched “True Oldies 1290/100.3” WZTI Greenfield/Milwaukee WI as “Fonz-FM“. Named for Henry Winkler’s famous character on the Milwaukee set Happy Days, the station is now utilizing a locally programmed Oldies format focusing on hits from the late 1950s through 70s as opposed to the “True Oldies Channel” network it had been using. The station is heard on 100.3 W262CJ Milwaukee and in the southern suburbs of the market on 107.3 W297BY Franklin WI.
Scripps News/Talk 620 WTMJ Milwaukee has signed on FM translator 103.3 W277CV Milwaukee. The 250w/244m signal operates from the tower of Scripps’ WTMJ-TV/94.5 WKTI with a nearly Class A comparable signal. The translator is owned by Frank Glass McCoy as this completes its gradual move from Waukegan IL since being granted a Construction Permit in 2013. The translator’s original CP to move to Milwaukee was to have it rebroadcast Liberal Talk 1510 WRRD Waukesha. That station now has its own CP for a new translator on 101.7. The addition of WTMJ to FM will bring play-by-play of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks to FM in the market as well. WTMJ Radio is now broadcasting on FM in addition to its AM signal to expand the reach for Wisconsin’s most powerful ra...[Read More]

Just a couple weeks after joining Scripps Country “94.5 KTI Country” WKTI Milwaukee as interim morning host, Carol ‘CV’ Vonn will become the station’s midday host. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Vonn will move to middays once the station fills its morning vacancy. In that daypart she will replace Jillene Khan, who is exiting to join Midwest Family Broadcasting AC “Magic 98” 98.1 WMGN Madison in an undisclosed role. Khan was the last remaining of the original staffers hired by WKTI following its flip to Country in May 2015 starting in nights and later moving to middays.
Scripps Media Country “94.5 KTI Country” WKTI Milwaukee has parted ways with morning host Jake Kelly. Kelly’s departure comes on the heels of his partner Tanner Jay’s exit last July. The duo joined WKTI from Midwest Communications CHR 101.1 WIXX Green Bay in November 2015. Their departure continues a reshuffling of the talent at the station that started with the arrival of former 106.1 WMIL morning co-host Karen Dallesandro for afternoons last month. Carol ‘CV’ Vonn, most recently morning co-host at Milwaukee Radio Alliance AC “B93.3” WLDB until her own exit last April, is joining WKTI as interim morning host.
