The FCC is proposing an adjustment of its rules in regards of translator interference complaints. In partially adopting a rulemaking originally proposed by the National Association of Broadcasters and Aztec Capital Partners, the FCC would allow translator causing interference to make a change to any available frequency as opposed to just the minor changes allowed now. It will also require six legitimate interference complaints as opposed to just the one with all complaints required to demonstrate that they are a "regular listener" and is not connected to the affected station. Translators would also be protected if the interference claim comes from outside the affected station's 54dBu contour. The agency is also proposing to streamline or eliminate the rule that requires stations to ...[Read More]

For the first time since iHeartMedia dropped the network in favor of its Fox Sports Radio on 590 WDIZ in 2014, the ESPN Radio brand is once again available in Panama City FL. Horizon Broadcasting’s 104.3 WGSX Lynn Haven (formerly WBYW) launched on Monday as “104.3 ESPN Panama City” carrying the network feed plus ESPN’s regionally syndicated Paul Finebaum Show from 2-6pm. The new format goes up against Omni Broadcasting’s “93.5 The Ticket” WTKP Port St. Joe. The 104.3 frequency has been mostly silent the past few years. Its most recent identity was a brokered Gospel format as “Power 104.3” from April 2013 to January 2014. The station returned to the air earlier this month with a filler Rock format until Monday’s flip to Sports.
Following an informal objection and request for enforcement by Connoisseur Media, Edgewater Broadcasting has withdrawn its Construction Permit and License to Cover applications for 96.3 K242CI Casper WY to relocate to 102.5 in Billings MT. Edgewater had applied for and was granted a CP to move K242CI to Billings rebroadcasting Sun Mountain Inc.'s 1340 KBSR Laurel MT where it was operating as AC "Magic 102.5". Connoisseur claims that K242CI and 104.5 K283CP (licensed to rebroadcast 1450 KYLW Lockwood MT) have been operating illegally. Amongst Connoisseur's claims were that K242CI began operating in late 2016 but did not file for a license to cover until March, neither originating AM have not operated for multiple years now and no tower constructed at the licensed site for either station,...[Read More]
The Christmas music on WWLY Panama City gave way to its new identity of Classic Country “Wild Willie 100” at 8am this morning. Promoting “Real! Country! Legends!” such as George Strait, Reba McIntyre, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, the new format creates an older skewing in-market competitor for iHeartMedia’s market leading 92.5 WPAP and Powell Broadcasting’s “Kick’n 103.5” WKNK. Gulf South Communications Classic Country “96.9 The Legend” WDJR Hartford AL, which primarily serves the Dothan market, is also heard throughout much of the Panama City market. Marc Summers, Operations Manager for Magic Broadcasting Panama City will serve as Program Director for WWLY. Original Report 3/20: With Rock “97X” WYYX relocating...[Read More]
After seven months on 100.1, Magic Broadcasting Rock “97X” WYYX has returned to its primary home on 97.7 Bonifay FL following the repair of its antenna. The antenna for 97.7 was destroyed by a lightning strike in on July 31, 2016. Once it was known that the repairs would take awhile, the Rock format was moved to what was then Rhythmic Oldies “Groove 100.1” WVVE. The 12kW/123m Class C3 signal covered Panama City and adjacent towns, but not as much of the region as the 100kW/253m Class C1 97.7. For ratings purposes, WVVE and WYYX swapped call letters in November, but now with 97X back on 97.7 Magic Broadcasting has applied to move the WYYX calls back to 97.7. However, WVVE will be retired in favor of WWLY. We reported last month on the likely new format and brand name...[Read More]

Ryan fills the hole created by Mandy Williamson’s move to LM Communications Hot AC “Your 106.3” WCDA Lexington KY. She will be joined by incumbent co-host/producer Jimmy Phillips. "And the thing is we found out about it from a listener." That was Empire Broadcasting head Steve Kingston in response to his AAA 103.1 WRNR-FM Grasonville/Annapolis MD gaining a new co-channel neighbor from the AM Translator Revitalization Waiver. American FM Associates was granted a CP to move 94.3 W276DE Roxana DE to 103.1 in Baltimore where it would rebroadcast Christian Talk 1230 WRBS with 99w/49m. While the new translator will come nowhere near the protected contour of WRNR, the station reaches a much broader area thanks to the water propagation of the Chesapeake Bay. Much like other translators that have attempted to move into markets where rimshot stations were already established, it is doubtful the translator will ever see light of day on 103.1 once WRNR's Petition For Rec...[Read More]
iHeartMedia has launched “96.3 Real Fun Beach Radio” on 590 WDIZ Panama City/96.3 W242BF Springfield, FL. The first terrestrial station based on the iHeartRadio streaming channel, the new format features a broad mix of from multiple musical genres including Classic Hits, Country, and Pop, similar to the “Tailgate” branded stations in Charleston, WV and Colorado Springs. We do wonder however, how Beach Radio Inc.’s Classic Hits “Beach 95.1” WBPC Ebro/Panama City will handle their brand identity being used by WDIZ. iHeart purchased the Construction Permit for W242BF from Way Media in February for $75,000, while 590 WDIZ previously ran a Sports format as “Fox Sports 590“. The first few songs on “96.3 Real Fun Beach Radio” were:...[Read More]
