Mid-West Family Broadcasting Acquires WDKB

Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s Mid-Way Radio Inc. has announced it has purchased AC “B95” 94.9 WDKB DeKalb IL from DeKalb County Radio for $650,000. Zander Named WXRX Program Director

Midwest Family Broadcasting Rock “104.9 The X” WXRX Belvidere/Rockford IL has named Mark Zander as their new Program Director/Morning Host. Zander joins WXRX from Hubbard Classic Rock “97.1 The Drive” WDRV Chicago where he was currently serving as a weekend and fill-in host. He has previously programmed Weigel Soft AC “87.7 MeTV-FM” WRME-LP Chicago and Digity’s Classic Hits “95.9 The River” WERV Aurora and Rock “100.7 Q-Rock” WRXQ Coal City IL.

WNTA Rockford To Flip To Sports

Over the past two weeks, Midwest Family Broadcasting has registered domains for multiple possible flips in the Rockford IL market. The first potential shoe dropped today as the company confirmed Spanish CHR “La Movida 1330” WNTA will flip to Sports “Sports Fan 1330” on August 1. The new station will utilize programming from Fox Sports Radio and the regionally syndicated Bill Michaels Show based at Entercom Sports “105.7 The Fan” 1250 WSSP Milwaukee. WNTA will also carry local high school sports, University of Wisconsin and Chicago Bears football.

Station Sales Roberto Gonzalez’s MBM Radio sells Variety Hits “104.9 Jack-FM” KJAV Alamo and Spanish News/Talk 840 KVJY Pharr in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to Andrés Bichara’s Bi-Media License for $2.2 million. These are Bi-Media’s first stations, while MBM as R Communications will still retain 3 FMs and 1 AM in the McAllen/Edinburg/Brownsville market. WTJK Beloit Shifting From Sports To Talk

As Big Radio has closed on its acquisition of the two stations it acquired from Good Karma Broadcasting, Scott Thompson’s group will flip Sports “ESPN 1380” WTJK South Beloit, WI to Talk on Monday, April 14. To be branded as “Big AM 1380“, the station will partially fill the void left by the flip of “100.5 NTA-FM” W263BJ Loves Park, IL in February. The new lineup will consist of The Morning Mess with owner Scott Thompson from 5-9am, Glenn Smith 9-11am, Jock Talk from 11am-1pm (moving from its current 4-6pm slot), Big Time with Tony Huml 1-3pm, Sly from 3-6pm, and ESPN Radio in nights and overnights. Midwest Family Flips Two In Rockford

Midwest Family Broadcasting has flipped two of its Rockford, IL stations at 3pm today. First Variety Hits “95.3 Bob-FM” WRTB Winnebago/Rockford went to Country “95.3 The Bull“. Positioning itself as “20 In A Row Country”, WRTB will give a crosstown competitor to Townsquare Media’s “Q98.5” WXXQ. WXXQ was second in the market in the Fall 2013 ratings with an 11.3 share. WRTB’s Variety Hits format had a 4.0 share in the ratings period. News/Talk “100.5 NTA-FM” W263BJ Loves Park has flipped to Classic Hits “100.5 River-FM“. Focusing on pop hits of the 60s through 80s, River-FM will be imaged by WLS-FM Chicago’s Fred Winston. Midwest Family acquired its Rockford cluster last year from Maverick Media.

La Movida Moves To Rockford

Midwest Family Broadcasting is making its first major change at its recently acquired Rockford, IL cluster. Comedy “Funny 1330” WNTA will shift to Spanish “La Movida” on Monday, June 10. The new format will duplicate the programming of new sister 1480 WLMV Madison, WI. “La Movida” consists of a mix of Spanish language News/Talk and musical genres. It replaces the less than year old Comedy format that debuted last July. Maverick Media Sells Eau Claire & Rockford Clusters

Following its sales of its Lima, OH and Santa Rosa, CA clusters earlier this month, Maverick Media concludes its exit from the radio industry with the announced sale of its Eau Claire, WI and Rockford, IL stations to Midwest Family Broadcasting. The $15.5 Million purchase includes a total of ten stations and a translator. Midwest Family will begin operating the stations via LMA on May 1. In addition to the newly acquired clusters, Midwest Family Broadcasting operates stations in La Crosse WI, Madison WI, Springfield IL, Springfield MO and St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, MI. Maverick Media News/Talk 1330 WNTA Rockford, IL has begun simulcasting on 100.5 W263BJ Loves Park bringing the station’s programming to FM. With the addition of the FM translator, the station has rebranded as “100.5 NTA-FM” completely downplaying the AM frequency. Maverick acquired the translator in July from Edgewater Broadcasting and subsequently moved it from Beloit, WI and upgraded it from 4 to 230 watts. The FM launched at 11:11am on 11/11/2011. With the July 4 holiday, its been a quiet start to the month on the translator front. Here’s the rundown of the big moves since our last report. Maverick Media has acquired W262BR Beloit, WI from Edgewater Broadcasting for $45,000 and has begun the process of moving the station to Rockford, IL. The moves will bump the translator from 4 watts on 100.3 to 230 watts on 100.5 where it will move to the same tower as new sister Active Rock “104.9 The X” WXRX.
