After closing on its purchase of Oldies 88.5 WMCE-FM Erie PA, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is acquiring Oldies “Hitland 106.9” 1220 WSRQ Sarasota and translators 95.9 W240DP Venice and 106.9 W295BH Sarasota FL from Jim Lampl’s Florida Talk Radio Inc. for $520,000. The University, which operates a second campus in Bradenton FL, will convert the station to non-commercial but retain the format. Two groups operating in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market have worked out a deal to transfer a station across the New York state line. WSRQ Sarasota To Flip To Oldies

Jim Lampl’s Florida Talk Radio LLC will flip Talk 1220 WSRQ/106.9 W295BH Sarasota FL to Oldies on Friday, June 29 at 5:00pm. WSRQ will be rebranded as “Hitland SRQ” with a focus on 1960s and 70s music as the Hitland show that currently airs from 9pm-12am on the station becomes the full-time format. The station will retain its local “Suncoast Mornings” show from 7-9am hosted by Kaylene McCaw and David Wolfe. In a statement announcing the change, owner Jim Lampl explained, “The change is motivated by a desire to shut off the megaphone that talk radio provides to strident voices. For too long, some of the most popular national programs have also been the most divisive.”

iHeart Launches NewsRadio 1320 Sarasota

iHeartMedia continued its total shake-up of its Sarasota FL cluster with the launch of News/Talk “Newsradio 1320” WFLG Venice (formerly WDDV). The station takes the place of half of the Soft Oldies “Sunny” simulcast that remains on 1450 WSDV Sarasota. Since the start of 2016, iHeart has changed over its entire Sarasota cluster. Active Rock “105.9 The Buzz” WTZB relaunched as Classic Rock “Z105“, AC “92.1 The Coast” WLTQ-FM was shut-down as Country 106.5 WCTQ moved to 92.1 and Spanish Tropical “Rumba 106.5” WRUB targeting Tampa was launched.

Rumba Launches In Tampa

As expected, iHeartMedia has completed the move of Country 106.5 WCTQ Sarasota FL to 92.1 and debuted Spanish CHR “Rumba 106.5” WLTQ-FM at 9am today. While located in their Sarasota cluster, iHeart is marketing the station as a Tampa outlet to compete against Beasley Media’s “Maxima 92.5” WYUU which is the only commercial Spanish FM in a market that is 16% hispanic. As we reported in mid-February, a Tampa based marketing company, S3 Media, registered the domains being used by the new station:,,,, and The new “Rumba 106.5” is positioning itself as “#1 Para Exitos y Musica Variada” which translates to “#1 For Hits and Music Variety”.

WCTQ Sarasota Moves To 92.1; New Format Coming To 106.5

iHeartMedia Country 106.5 WCTQ Sarasota FL has moved to 92.1 replacing AC “92.1 The Coast” WLTQ-FM Venice. While currently simulcasting on both frequencies, WCTQ will revert to the frequency it was located on from 1997 until 1999. The move increases the station’s coverage in the southern portions of of the Sarasota-Bradenton market although increasing overlap with sister “Kix Country 92.9” WIKX Charlotte Harbor. What’s next for 106.5? A few weeks ago we reported on domain registrations made by a Tampa based marketing company for a possible “Rumba” branded Spanish language station.
