WRQY Moves To Classic Rock

Forever Media Sports/Active Rock “Rocky 96.5” WRQY Moundsville/Wheeling WV has flipped to Classic Rock. The move comes with the station dropping ESPN Radio’s Golic & Wingo morning show and replacing it with Free Beer & Hot Wings. WRQY continues to serve as the Wheeling affiliate for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. WRQY registered a 3.4 share in the Fall 2017 Nielsen Audio ratings. The move to mostly music places the station closer to iHeartMedia Rock “Eagle 107.5” WEGW which held a 10.1 share in the fall.

Ohio Midland Newsgroup agrees to purchase Sports “OV Sports” 1430 WEIR Weirton WV/Steubenville OH and 94.9 W235BX Colliers WV, Classic Hits “106.3 The River” WCDK Cadiz OH/Wheeling WV, and the CP to move 94.7 W234AV Punxsatawney PA to 102.1 Weirton from Priority Communications for $700,000. After acquiring News/Talk “107.7 The Pulse” WTPL Hillsboro/Concord NH along with two other stations from Great Eastern Radio for $2.6 million, Dirk Nadon’s Lakes Media turns around and sells WTPL to Binnie Media for $1.3 million. Forever Brings Classic Country Lejends To Wheeling

Forever Media has launched a second Classic Country brand that serves Wheeling WV. Sports “ESPN 1290” WOMP Bellaire OH flipped last week to Classic Country “Lejends 100.1/1290” under new WLEJ call letters. 100.1 is recently launched translator 100.1 W261DH Wheeling. WLEJ is branding itself as “Best Country Of The 80s & 90s”, a positioner that is also used by Forever Media’s recently launched “Willie 103.5” WLYI Burgettstown PA that . While WLEJ is targeting the Wheeling market directly, WLYI is focusing its programming and ad sales on the nearby Pittsburgh market.

Forever Broadcasting & Keymarket Licenses To Merge

Three of Kerby Confer and Donald Alt’s broadcast holding companies are merging. Forever of PA, LLC, Keymarket Licenses, and Forever Broadcasting LLC will merge into FM Radio Licenses, LLC. The combined company will own 45 stations and 1 translator in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia including Forever’s stations in Altoona, Johnstown, Meadville/Franklin, New Castle, State College and Keymarket’s stations in Pittsburgh and Uniontown, PA and Wheeling, WV. Sports Rock Comes To Wheeling

Is it Sports? Is it Rock? If it’s Keymarket Communications’ 96.5 WYJK-FM Moundsville/Wheeling, WV it’s both. WYJK-FM dropped its prior Variety Hits “96.5 Jack-FM” identity on Monday for a Sports/Active Rock hybrid branded as “Rocky 96.5” WRQY. The new format features ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike In The Morning followed by Westwood One’s Rock 2.0 programming. WRQY’s previous format had plunged from a 5.6 share in the Spring 2013 Nielsen Audio ratings to a 1.3 in 2014. The new format positions the station against Clear Channel’s duo of Rock “Eagle 107.5” WEGW and “Fox Sports 1400” WBBD.

Fox Sports Debuts In Wheeling

Clear Channel’s 1400 WBBD Wheeling, WV has dropped the 24/7 Comedy network and flipped to Sports as “Fox Sports 1400“. WBBD is running the Fox Sports network lineup around the clock and is the second 24/7 Comedy affiliate to switch to Sports in recent weeks following sister 1580 WWTF Lexington, KY. WBBD was one of 12 Clear Channel stations to switch to Comedy in October 2012. The stations registered a 0.0 share of the Wheeling audience in the Fall 2013 Nielsen Audio ratings.

Jazz Returns To Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Public Media launched Jazz 88.1 WYZR Bethany, WV on Saturday, August 31 at 1:15pm. The station, which technically serves the Wheeling WV/Steubenville OH market, will rimshot the southern and western suburbs of Pittsburgh. The station’s purpose is to restore Jazz programming to the market following the sale of 90.5 WDUQ, which was sold and flipped to NPR News/Talk in July 2011 as WESA. Pittsburgh Public Media acquired what was then 88.1 WVBC from Bethany College in March for $110,000. The new WYZR is launching with programming from PGHJazzChannel.net, which features programming from former WDUQ staffers and is co-owned with the station.

Clear Channel Launches 12 Comedy Stations

Biggie Country Getting Bigger At Jack’s Expense In Wheeling

After just nine months on the air, Keymarket Country “Biggie 96.5” WBGI-FM Wheeling is getting upgraded. On September 10, “Biggie” will relocate from 96.5 to 100.5, while Variety Hits “100.5 Jack-FM” WYJK-FM will take the 96.5 slot. The move gives the Country format a boost to the Class B signal licensed to Bellaire OH that operates with 48kW at 152 meters. Jack will slide to the Class A signal licensed to Moundsville WV operating with 2.5kW at 138 meters. “Biggie 96.5” debuted on December 27, 2011 on a brand new signal to the market.

Biggie Coming To Wheeling

Update 12/27: Keymarket launched the Country format on “Biggie 96.5” WBGI-FM this morning. The switch to Country puts the station in competition with Clear Channel’s 98.7 WOVK, which rules the market with over a 20 share, and sister “Froggy” 103.5 WOGH, which targets the Pittsburgh market as a suburban trimulcast.
