Corus Classic Rock “Big 97.5” CJKR-FM Winnipeg flipped back to Mainstream Rock and its former “Power 97” identity at noon today after a little more than a year and a half after dropping it. Morning hosts Shadoe Davis and Joe Aiello remain in place with the change. The remainder of the station’s on-air lineup will be announced in September. CJKR registered a 3.2 share in the Spring 2016 Numeris ratings, well behind Rogers Media’s 92.1 CITI-FM’s 8.7 share.
Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has rebranded Classic Hits “Fab 94.3” CHIQ-FM Winnipeg has rebranded as “94.3 The Drive“. The move corresponds with the drop of 1960s tracks from the station to focus on hits of the 70s and 80s with a greater Rock lean. CHIQ ranked 10th out of 16 stations with a 3.9 share in the Fall 2015 Numeris ratings. Kerri Salki and Trevor Gowen will host mornings with Alix Michaels in middays and Kelly Parker in afternoons.

Evanov Soft AC 100.7 CFJL Winnipeg has gained its third identity in almost as many months. In October the CRTC allowing the station to drop the Adult Standards portion of its playlist by dropping the specialty requirement from the station’s license. Soon after CFJL dropped its “100.7 The Breeze” moniker for just “100.7 Lite & Refreshing“. Now the station becomes Evanov’s seventh Jewel branded station as “Jewel 101“. In the Fall 2013 BBM ratings, CFJL registered a 1.8 share of the Winnipeg audience.
Golden West Broadcasting will flip Christian CHR “Ignite 107” CFEQ-FM Winnipeg to Classical “Classic 107” CKCL-FM on Thursday, December 5 at 10:00am. Golden West gained CRTC approval earlier this year to flip CFEQ to a Classical format that will feature 70% classical and concert music and the rest a mix of jazz, blues, and instrumental versions of pop songs. The Jazz programming will air from 9pm-12am on the station. The station is currently stunting with a brief loop of Classical and Jazz tracks. Golden West also owns Christian AC 95.1 CHVN in the Winnipeg market.
The CRTC has approved the second attempt by Bell Canada to acquire Astral Media. “Astral’s application put forward a different approach and responded to many of our concerns” said Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC. “Yet there remained a significant risk that BCE could exert its market power to limit choice and competition. Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has announced the acquisition of three stations from the proposed Astral/Bell merger. From Bell the group has acquired Rhythmic AC “Kool 101.5” CKBE Calgary and Classic Hits “Fab 94.3” CHIQ Winnipeg. Coming from Astral is Country “QX 104” 104.1 CFQX. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The sale is contingent on CRTC approval of this and the Astral/Bell merger. After rejecting the planned merger of Bell Media and Astral in October, the two companies plans have have been approved by the Competition Bureau. In order to do so, a few swaps will be made with Corus Entertainment and Shaw Media mainly involving ownership stakes in cable television networks but one that has ramifications on the radio industry as Corus will acquire two radio stations in Ottawa: Classic Hits “Boom 99.7” CJOT and Rock “106.9 The Bear” CKQB.
