West Palm Beach Signal Shuffle On June 1

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
June 1, 2012

Sunny 107.9 104.3 WEAT Country 103.1 WIRK Now 97.9 WRMFUpdate 6/1: The frequency swap took place at 12am as WIRK and Sunny moved to new frequencies and “Smooth FM 104.3” launched as a placeholder on 104.3 as it prepares to be sold and moved to Miami.

The final song on “Now 103.1” was Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning. That happened to be the final song on WPBZ’s previous incarnation as “The Buzz” prior to it becoming “Now” last December. The first song on 103.1 WIRK was Lee Brice – A Woman Like You.

107.9 ended its 40+ year run as a Country station with Justin Moore – ‘Til My Last Day. That led into “Sunny 107.9” taking over with Kid Rock – All Summer Long.

“Sunny 104.3” chose the Bee Gees – Staying Alive as its final song. That led into the debut of a new format as Smoooth AC “SmoothFM 104.3“. This format will serve as a longterm placeholder as the station awaits approval for its move into the Miami market and a new owner. The WIRK and WEAT-FM calls move along with the formats to their new homes while 104.3 becomes WMSF.

The first hour of “SmoothFM 104.3” consisted of:
Big Mountain – Baby I Love Your Way
Anita Baker – Sweet Love
Eric Marienthal – Get Here
Sade – Keep Looking
Earth Wind & Fire – That’s The Way Of The World
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are
Mark Antoine – Madrid
The Police – Every Breath You Take
Beyonce – Halo (May have been exclusive to stream during stopset)
Mariah Carey – We Belong Together
James Ingram – Yah Mo Be There
Warren Bernhardt – Felinicity
Elliott Yamin – Wait For You
Diana Ross – Missing You

Original Report 5/24: The first aftershocks of Palm Beach Broadcasting’s acquisition of CBS’ West Palm Beach cluster will be felt on Friday, June 1.

Country 107.9 WIRK will slide to 103.1 where it replaces Adult CHR “Now 103.1” WPBZ. 107.9 will take on the AC format of “Sunny 104.3” WEAT. No changes are planned for Rhythmic “X102.3” WMBX or Palm Beach Broadcasting’s Hot AC 97.9 WRMF.

No word yet on what will appear on 104.3. That frequency and Urban AC “B106.3” WHFS are due to be spun off to keep the cluster within the FCC’s limits. It is expected that 104.3 will be moved into the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market eventually.
