Two St. Louis Sports Stations To Become The Man & Woman

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
April 30, 2013

590 KFNS St. Louis The Fan Man 1380 The Woman KXFN Bubba Love SpongeUpdate 4/30: “590 The Man” KFNS and “1380 The Woman” KXFN will both debut on Wednesday, May 1.

The full lineup for “The Man” will include current KFNS morning host Tim McKernan remaining in mornings until his deal runs out in July, at which point the station will pick up Bubba The Love Sponge. Current KFNS middayer Frank Cusumano remains from 10am-12pm, followed by “The Alpha Males” Brian McKenna & Jeff Burton from 12pm to 3pm. “Smash & Twist” will follow from 3pm-6pm hosted by longtime St. Louis personality Asher “Smash” Benrubi and former St. Louis Blue Tony Twist. Former St. Louis Cardinal Jack Clark will follow from 6-8pm, Charlie “Tuna” Edwards and Andy Strickland from 8-10pm, and Jeff Vernetti from 10pm to 12am.

The “1380 The Woman” lineup will feature 12 hours of locally originating programming daily. Katy Kruze and Terrye Seigel will be heard in mornings from 6-10am. Their show currently airs on sister Classic Rock “100.7 The Viper” in the western suburbs of St. Louis and will continue on both stations. “Let’s Talk Shop” with LaTeacha Tigue and Dawn Meadows Dixon will air from 9-11am. “Three’s Company” hosted by Sara Bruce, Sarah Estopare, and Jay Randolph, Jr. will run from 11am-1pm followed by “The Healthy Beauty” with Sonja Shin and KTVI-TV morning anchor Angie Mock from 1-3pm. “Kelley and Cassandra Live” will end the daytimer’s programming lineup from 3-6pm.

Original Report 3/8: Grand Slam Sports will debut a pair of new Talk formats on its pair of Sports stations in St. Louis.

“590 The Fan” KFNS and “1380 The Fan 2” KXFN will become “590 The Man” and “1380 The Woman” respectively. Dan Caesar of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the changes will take place around May 1.

“590 The Man” will be anchored by the syndicated Bubba The Love Sponge in mornings. Current KFNS midday host Frank Cusumano will remain with the station in an undetermined timeslot. The existing morning show, led by InsideSTL.com’s Tim McKernan posted that they were attempting to purchase their own station, but later tweeted that they were working on a deal to keep their show on KFNS. Grand Slam Sports President Dan Marshall stated in the Post-Dispatch article that the new KFNS format would be 70% Guy Talk/30% Sports.

Few details are available about the planned “1380 The Woman” other than it will feature local hosts.

590 KFNS Wood River, IL operates with 1kW around the clock, while 1380 KXFN St. Louis runs 5kW daytime and 1kW nights. Both utilize directional antennas. Sports programming will still be available in the market on Hubbard’s “101 Sports” KXOS and in some dayparts on CBS’ News/Talk 1120 KMOX.

INSTANT INSIGHT: Both KFNS and KXFN have been non-factors in the ratings recently. While it’s tough to expect any AM signal, especially those with weak signals, in this day and age to become a factor in a market, at least Grand Slam is trying to create unique programming in the market. With a proper online brand connected to the stations, perhaps there will be opportunities to revitalize these two stations.
