Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
July 10, 2023

101.9 WDET DetroitWayne State University Public News/Talk 101.9 WDET-FM Detroit has announced the appointment of L. Adam Fox as Program Director.

The Ontario native has spent his entire career in Canada with stints programming community stations 105.5 CHRY-FM Toronto and CKUA Edmonton, and Station Manager of 99.1 CJAM-FM Windsor. Since 2013, Fox has served as Director of Programs for the Calgary based National Music Center

Detroit’s public radio station, WDET 101.9 FM announces the addition of media and arts leader L. Adam Fox as Program Director. Fox will lead the WDET team as it develops news, music and conversation programming that speaks to the unique, diverse and thriving Detroit community. Fox reports to WDET General Manager, Mary Zatina.

“Adam’s experience and skills in programming are exceptional and he also brings a leadership style that will enhance both staff and listener experiences,” said WDET General Manager Mary Zatina. “WDET is on a fast track to excellence in all areas and Adam will be steering our sound in a way that fully maximizes the community service we deliver.”

With childhood and family roots in the Windsor/Essex County area, Fox returns home to the region. He brings his radio, media, and arts leadership experiences to WDET, Detroit’s non-profit NPR station. With a commitment to reflecting the diverse culture and perspectives of Detroit and surrounding areas, he’s eager to help WDET continue to evolve in response to the communities it serves, using the airwaves and digital media to inform, educate, and entertain. Prior to joining WDET, Fox was Program Director for Canada’s National Music Centre, a non-profit museum, artist incubator and live performance venue in Calgary, Alberta, where he helped steward the implementation of the first permanent exhibition of Canada’s Music, and developed programs that encompassed education, artist development, and live music.

Fox was also Content Director for CKUA Radio Network in Alberta and Station Manager and Music Programming Director for CJAM in Windsor, Ontario. He holds degrees in English Literature from University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario and Journalism from Humber College in Toronto, Ontario. Fox’s interests include music of all genres, place-making and municipal politics and literature poetry and art.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team to support the critical mission of WDET! This station has always been a beacon for me, reflecting the stories, music, and culture of my favorite city in the world, and bringing the news of the world with a Detroit perspective,” said Adam Fox.

WDET members are invited to meet Fox at several WDET events happening throughout the summer in the greater Detroit area.

I’m sure Fox is probably qualified for the position but it is sad to read that all of his experience was with Canadian stations and in Canada. You mean there were no Americans who have the experience required, have worked in public radio and might even already have the necessary knowledge of the Detroit market. It would have been nice to see an American broadcaster advance to that position. However, maybe WDET-FM can attract more Canadian dollars on its next fundraiser.
