Following the move of LGBTQ+ Dance KGAY-FM to 103.1 on December 26, Brad Fuhr’s KGAY PSP will complete his Palm Springs shuffle with the launch of AC “Sunny 106.5” K293CL Thousand Palms/KGAY-HD2 on January 1.
The new Sunny will focus on music from the 1990s and 2000s with core artists listed as Mariah Carey, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, Green Day, NSYNC, Adele, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd. The move positions the station closest against Connoisseur Media’s “Mix 100.5” KPSI. EJ Tyler will serve as PD/morning host, while local television meteorologist and “103.1 MeTV-FM” KMEE midday host Patrick Evans moves to Sunny in the same daypart.
Owner Brad Fuhr commented, “We know MeTV-FM was loved by many,” said Fuhr. “But we saw an opportunity to bring music to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley that hasn’t been heard on radio dials in some time. Hard as it is to believe, the music that played on the radio in the 90’s and 2000’s is now a quarter century old. So, we’re bringing that music back to listeners who are now in their 40’s and 50’s. Our area businesses want to reach people who grew up with that music. Sunny 106.5 will be a great way to reach this important demographic.”
In discussing the move of KGAY to 103.1, Fuhr added, “KGAY has been one of the most successful low power translators in the country at 106.5 FM. The move to 103.1 FM allows for increased coverage throughout the valley and upgrade to an HD digital signal. KGAY owes its remarkable success to our extraordinarily loyal audience, advertisers and community partners. As KGAY proudly steps into its eighth year, our new stronger FM signal will allow us to continue to champion the Coachella Valley’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community with the music, voices and spirit that have made KGAY a local favorite from the very beginning.”
