Atlanta Gains A Classic Hip-Hop OG

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
November 25, 2014

OG 97.9 Q100 Twenty 20 W250BC Atlanta WWWQ-HD3 Classic Hip Hop BoomCumulus flipped CHR “Q100/20” 97.9 W250BC Atlanta/99.7 WWWQ-HD3 to Classic Hip-Hop “OG 97.9” at 12pm today.

The station joins Core Communicator’s “Old School 99.3” in the Classic Hip-Hop arena in Atlanta. Unlike 99.3, the 97.9 signal does cover all of Atlanta proper.

The previous “Q100/20” format was a new music centric flanker to CHR “Q100” 99.7 WWWQ. It registered a 0.6 share in the November Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings monthly released yesterday.

The first hour of OG 97.9 consisted of:
Snoop Dogg – Gin & Juice
DMX – Party Up
Fugees – Ready Or Not
Ice Cube – Check Yo Self
Lil Jon & Yin Yang Twins & East Side Boyz – Get Low
Dr. Dre – Nothin But A G Thing
Jay Z – Big Pimpin
Missy Elliot – Work It
Warren G & Nate Dogg – Regulate
Juvenile – Back That Thing Up
50 Cent – In Da Club
2Pac – How Do You Want It
Naughty By Nature – Hip Hop Hooray
Joe – I Wanna Know
Notorious B.I.G. – Big Poppa
Outkast – Ms. Jackson

OG 97.9 FM launched today at noon as Atlanta’s Classic Hip Hop station. It’s the throwback hip hop you grew up featuring Dr Dre, Missy Elliott, Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Ludacris, Snoop, and LL Cool J; all the O-G’s of Hip-Hop.

In 1990 hip-hop made up one-third of the Hot 100. By 1999, it was the country’s best-selling genre, with more than 81 million albums sold. Atlanta, the heart of the Dirty South, was a hot bed of the music and culture during this period. The city hosted the rise of Outkast, Ludacris, TLC, Jermaine Dupri, Goodie Mob, Bow Wow, Kriss Kross and more. Now these artists and their East and West Coast counterparts finally have a proper home on Atlanta’s OG 97.9-Classic Hip Hop.

“This is an exciting day for Atlanta radio,” said Cumulus Atlanta Operations Manager Rob Roberts. “We are bringing a format that hasn’t been available and we’re thrilled to be the home of Classic Hip Hop.”

OG 97.9 FM replaces Q100-20, which will continue to be available to fans via Rdio’s Q100-20 Playlist. Information regarding Q100-20 is available at http://www.Q100Atlanta.com.
