The Attorney Generals Office of the State of California has launched an audit of the Pacifica Foundation over failures to comply with California law governing nonprofit foundations.
Pacifica, the non-commercial operator of 99.5 WBAI New York, 90.7 KPFK Los Angeles, 94.1 KPFA and 89.3 KFPB Berkeley/San Francisco, 90.1 KPFT Houston, 89.3 WPFW Washington, DC and six translators, is being requested to send over 23 documents regarding financial operations dating back to January 1, 2010 within thirty days of the letter being sent on December 17.
Operations of Pacifica is very factionalized with two groups usually battling back and forth for operational control over the Foundation. The most recent salvo took place in March when Executive Director Summer Reese was fired. Pacifica has had grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting withheld the past two years for insufficient accounting practices, misreported revenues and failure to comply with rules on open meetings and financial transparency.

Not that this isn’t the latest in a series of nothingburgers. But I would be shocked if anything comes off of this.

This is more of a Season Premiere for the 2015 Edition of Whats Happening Pacifica.. This stuff has been going on since the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Keep in mind that FAQ comes from one of the two factions battling for control of the organization. Anything that comes from either side needs to be taken with a major grain of salt. And that has nothing on the newest investigation, but rather everything else they’ve had going on the past few years.
But there’s some truth in it. What’s interesting is Summer Reese locked herself in the Pacifica National Office last spring and she had an industrial paper shredder (the kind that comes on trucks) parked outside that office. In spite of her animosity to Pacifica’s “other faction”, I would hope she was merely digitizing the papers and tidying up the place.
