I95.7 Miami Debuts

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
January 6, 2014

I95 I95.7 Ritmo Romantico DJ106.7 DJ Laz 106.7 Latino LA 96.3 WRMA Fort Lauderdale Miami Los Angeles El Zol 95.7 WXDJ SBS

Update 1/6: 95.7 WXDJ flipped to Spanish Hot AC “I95” this morning. The station is positioned as “El Ritmo Romantico de Miami”.

The move places the station into competition with Univision’s “Amor 107.5” WAMR and Clear Channel’s “Mega 94.9” WMGE.

The “I95” moniker was previously used in the Miami market by then CHR 94.9 WINZ-FM in the early 1980’s.

Update 1/3: “El Zol” is running sweepers that as of Monday, January 6 the station will be heard exclusively on 106.7. 95.7 WXDJ will debut its new format then.

Update 11/29: SBS began the process of moving “El Zol” from 95.7 WXDJ to 106.7 WRMA at 12:00 this morning as both stations began simulcasting.

The stations are emphasizing the new 106.7 frequency as the new permanent home for the format. The move gives “El Zol” a stronger signal in the market as it relocated from the Class C2 signal of 95.7 operating with 40kW at 167 meters to the Class C signal at 106.7 with 100kW at 300 meters.

Original Report 11/26: Morning host DJ Laz has quietly gone missing from SBS’ “Latino 96.3” KXOL Los Angeles and “DJ 106.7” WRMA Fort Lauderdale/Miami.

KXOL’s Carolina Marquez, Eddie Hernandez, and Xavier Villalobos are currently hosting the morning show in Los Angeles, while Laz co-host Johanna Gomez, WRMA middayer Michelle Fay and mixer DJ Kid Polo are doing so in Miami. While he is still listed on both station’s websites, Laz has removed all references to the stations from his social media profiles.

Laz joined SBS from mornings at Beasley’s Rhythmic CHR “Power 96” WPOW-FM in 2012 first in Los Angeles and then Miami after waiting out the expiration of his non-compete. Both KXOL and WRMA shifted to a Spanglish Rhythmic format with the addition of DJ Laz, but neither have moved the ratings needle. KXOL registered a 1.6 share in the November PPM’s released yesterday, while WRMA dropped to a 1.4 in October.

There appears to be a frequency swap potentially tied into this. SBS’ Spanish Tropical “El Zol 95.7” WXDJ North Miami Beach is teasing something happening on Friday regarding the end of “El Zol 95.7“.

How many “I” stations play something besides Country? Especially when the station’s moniker is the name of a local Interstate …. like I-95?

Cumulus has CHR “I93.3” Dallas and “I106.7” WNFN Nashville, Hot AC “I94” Indianapolis.

There’s “I95” Rock formats in Danbury, CT and Savannah and Classic Hits in Bangor. For any letter named station you can find multiple formats using it.
